CAST & VOICE TALENT
KEN: This is Kenneth Vigue. Grab a chair and gather close, because as we carve this jack o ’lantern together I want to tell you a story. I grew up in an old seaside town on Massachusetts’ north shore, the same one of which Lovecraft used as inspiration for his cursed town of Innsmouth. Down a wooded backroad long after I had stopped trick or treating, I found myself one Halloween night crouched and sprinting across the grassy field of a local state park. Fueled by teenage hormones and possibly boredom, friends and I decided to spend that Halloween confronting a local legend, that of Hell’s Gates. Maudsley State Park is a place that I spent a lot of time at growing up, for one thing it was massive, for another it was once a grand estate, now long since gone with just the outbuildings, woods and gardens left. Even as kids we all had heard the stories of the great stone and wrought iron gates of the place being a source of supernatural and otherworldly horror. Legend had it that one Halloween night the master of the place had lost his mind, chopping off the heads of servants and family alike. In the morning, passersby were horrified to see a row of bloody heads fixed atop the iron gates and the master nowhere to be found. It was said that act had opened a portal into hell and into it went the screaming master. Quietly that night, in dark clothes and with bellies full of cheap Chinese food and root beer we dashed along the wood line until at last in the distance we could see the moonlit great stone wall and wrought iron gates. Just as we were about to move closer to get a spot for the stroke of midnight when the heads were supposed to reappear, we heard crashing through the woods and a dark figure clothed completely in black running right at us. We took off and made our way swiftly to the road and I recall, in perhaps what could’ve been my most embarrassing last words, myself yelling out, “wait! Just wait a minute! Hang on a second!” By the time I made it to the car, the more athletic of my friends were already in with the engine running. We tore out down the street, fishtailing gravel and that was that. We never found out who that was and while it’s likely it was a Park Ranger having some fun with us, it would be our tradition to go urban exploring on dark autumn nights to chase the dark, to fight the dark. Halloween, like local legends, has roots so deep and so ancient that we often forget their origin. But the most universal thread amongst them all is to remind us to carry the light into the dark, to fight it, not fear it. Out of any guest who has ever joined our show the one we get the most requests for is voice actor Andreas Somville’s villainous Mr. Dark. This story will see his return, but also the introduction of a new character: Dolos the Archivist voiced by Bethesda’s own Ferret Baudoin and we are deeply honored to have him join the cast. Now…look, over there…on a lonely stretch of West Virginia road behind train tracks long abandoned a man long in years sits with his grandson carving a pumpkin just like this one. The Great War has not yet come to pass, but this will be his final Halloween on Earth. Before he goes, he has one final act of kindness for a world he will leave behind. A reckoning is about to occur, one that many years later will have consequences for Chad, Simon and the gang. The cast of CHAD: A Fallout 76 story proudly present, “Dark Hallowe’en”.
MEDIA: DARK’S THEME INTRO
SCENE 1: EXT. R&G CROSSROADS – HALLOWEEN NIGHT. 2076
SFX: WHISPERING LEAVES. HALLOWEEN SONGS ON A RADIO. PUMPKIN CARVING SOUNDS.
HOLLOWAY: What shall it be this time? A goofy grin or a (funny spooky voice) scary scowl? GRRRRRAARRRR!
GRANDSON: (Laughing) A scary scowl!
HOLLOWAY: Scary scowl it is in then. Remember…before you get crazy with cutlery…take your time and be careful.
GRANDSON: (Annoyed) I know, I know. Always cut away from you…not towards you.
HOLLOWAY: …towards you. That’s right. So what devilry are you and Bobby up to this year eh?
GRANDSON: We’re going to meet up with Sam, Amanda and Lisa. Lisa’s Mom is going to drive us over to Beckley for some trick or treating, then she’s taking us to a spooky haunted corn maze!
HOLLOWAY: Haunted corn maze eh? Better take my hat with yah!
GRANDSON: Your hat? Why?
HOLLOWAY: You gotta watch your ears in a corn field boy! (chuckles)
GRANDSON: (eye roll) Grandddpaaa… (silent for a moment)
SFX: LEAVES RUSTLE. PUMPKIN CARVING NOISES.
GRANDSON: I wish you could take me like you used to.
HOLLOWAY: Me too kid, me too. There’s nothing I’d love more. Why I’d lead you down miles of dark lanes, streets you’ve never heard of, to homes just shy of ruin that despite looking like they wear the face of Halloween all year round, still have a smile behind a door and porch light and full-size candy bars in a brimming bowl. Those streets my boy are always where we’d venture to when I wasn’t much taller than you. We’d go in costumes so abstract in spookiness you’d think we fell headfirst into a hall closet. We’d set out in old bandages, or oversized threadbare clothes, or in a sheet frayed by endless summers and winters but mother always insisted could still be good for something. We’d head to those streets where no children were ever seen behind gothic fences still sturdy but promising lockjaw. Behind every bay window sat and stood hunched over, world weary, (and to us) ancient men and women who all had empty rooms upstairs still filled with the remnants of a child long since gone from home like forlorn museums of lost innocence. They would gaze expectantly out each fog glazed window into the dark of night with a bowl at the ready, “just in case”, they would say to themselves. Every year they waited for any witch, ghoul, vampire or goblin to emerge from the shadows into their porch light where a moth would be flailing impotently. They were the lonely, the forgotten, with bodies like brittle china but whose hearts still sang at this time of year whispering, “run, play, to the leaves, to the dark, to the delicious night, to candy, to friendship, to be young forever and feel young forever...come…come…” It was these streets you always go, because the treat is far more than a full-sized candy bar, it is to get them to open the door of those sagging homes and let in the smell of leaves, the cold moonlight and hallowed wind. To gaze into the face of the spirit of Halloween itself and taste it once more, the memory of when dark and all that was in it wasn’t something to fear, as they do now, where dark itself sits crouched at the top of the stairs…waiting…waiting. That…that is where we would go.
SFX: WIND WHISPERS. LEAVES RUSTLE. PUMPKIN CARVING CONTINUES. RADIO NEWS FADES IN.
RADIO: …the search continues for a missing girl in Beckley. One of 6 people reported missing in the last 4 days in the surrounding area. Police are asking if you have any information to the whereabouts of Claudia Monroe, Agatha DuFresne, Joseph Ellington, Amanda…
SFX: RADIO CLICK OFF.
HOLLOWAY: (Angry) That’s enough of that. How are we looking boy?
GRANDSON: There! He looks exxxtraaaaa spooky.
HOLLOWAY: That he does! Let’s light him up.
SFX: CANDLE FLICK.
GRANDSON: Ohhhhh!
HOLLOWAY: Not bad. Not bad.
SFX: TEA POURING.
GRANDSON: What’s that?
HOLLOWAY: Some good old herbal tea. Best thing for the joints when the seasons start changing.
GRANDSON: Can I try?
HOLLOWAY: Nope.
GRANDSON: How come?
HOLLOWAY: Because this isn’t your cup of tea. (Chuckles)
GRANDSON: Grandpaaaaa…
HOLLOWAY: Here. Look here, go fetch my project off the workbench.
GRANDSON: You’ve been working on that thing FOREVER! Okay.
SFX: RUNNING ON WOOD. DOOR OPENS. TEA IS SIPPED.
HOLLOWAY: (Groan in pain, clutching stomach)
GRANDSON: Here you go! Is it a pop gun? It’s real funny looking.
HOLLOWAY: Nope! This here is something special. Say did I ever tell you the story of Stingy Jack?
GRANDSON: Who is that?
HOLLOWAY: Ol’ Stingy Jack is where jack-o-lanterns started. Plop on down there, because we have time for one last story before you need to get going. Now let me see. A long time ago and far from here there lived a blacksmith prone to drink enough to tempt the devil named Stingy Jack. Now Ol’ Jack was about as cunning a con man as you could ever meet who possessed not an ounce of goodness in him. So black was his soul, that Ol’ Scratch himself decided to crawl up from below to claim him. On a night of full dark with no stars, Jack was greeted at a crossroads by a dead man, eyes glimmering with the lurid flickering light of possession. Jack knew his game was up and his soul had come to be reaped. Jack, ever the slippery con asked the Devil for one final request, a final drink. The Devil, so tickled by the boldness of this request, that he granted it. They found themselves at a tavern where before a roaring hearth, pint after pint went down all too smoothly as they spun tales of their greatest tricks. At last, the barkeep announced it was time for them to depart. Jack, with a twinkle in his eye padded his pockets and said, “Oh dear. I carry no coin, but the tab must be paid is our business is to be done. Let us play a great trick on this man…turn yourself into a silver piece and after he’s placed you in the till, transform back and we will be on our way.” The Devil, always up for a trick or two, agreed. With a flash of hellfire, a silver coin appeared in his place. Jack clapped his hands and withdrew from his pocket a crucifix and chain, twice wrapped round the coin and smartly placed it back into his pocket. The Devil was furious, from a voice with no mouth echoed in his alcohol addled brain he ranted and raved to be released. Stingy Jack struck a deal with him, a decade to be left in peace to continue his tricks and cons and his soul would at least belong to the Devil. He agreed and the Devil was released. Stingy Jack wasn’t quite through with Satan however, they would meet again 10 years later and once again that cunning old fox outsmarted the great liar himself and in due time, Jack died a natural death. Proudly standing before St. Peter Jack asked to be let in, but St. Peter rejected him with impunity, casting him down below. At last, in the flickering fires of damnation Jack now stood before the Devil himself. But the Devil, with a wicked grin, reminded Jack that his final deal with the Devil was not to go to hell. He was led to the edge of hell where the great blackness of infinity lay before him, a purgatory devoid of light, life and horizon. Jack asked for one final wish, a single ember of hellfire to light the darkness as he wandered in eternity. Satan plucked a glowing ember from the ground, produced a twisted and malignant turnip. Hollowing it out and carving Jack’s own face, he placed the ember inside and sent Jack off into the void with it. In the centuries to come, every now and then when the veil was thin and the last bit of life and greenery faded with winter’s breath, lights would sometimes be seen. Locals would cross themselves and whisper low under their breath, “there goes Jack o’ the lantern.”
GRANDSON: And he’s still out there?
HOLLOWAY: Well…maybe, maybe.
GRANDSON: Is the Devil real grandpa?
HOLLOWAY: Aye. That he is. That he is. That business with cloven hooves, red face and horns is all just theatrics, how we put a face to him so we recognize him for what he is. Truth is, he looks just like anybody…and that’s his greatest deception. He’s just an ordinary man casually strolling past as you mutter under breath after running from a bully what you wish something awful upon him; or sitting quietly in the shadows of the stands as you look out of the dugout and watch someone running a little faster than you, pitching a little harder than you. He sits, he smiles, he listens…10 feet away, 10 miles away…he’s always listening. Ahhh (pained).
GRANDSON: Are you okay?
HOLLOWAY: Just the ol’ ticker. Every time I look at the tops of that fence over there and think of running along it like I used to, it complains about the shadow of the idea. I’m okay.
GRANDSON: Did you ever meet the Devil grandpa?
SFX: SILENCE. IN THE WHISPER OF LEAVES A MOURNFUL TRAIN WHISTLE.
HOLLOWAY: Say, it’s getting late. You best beat feet back home. They should be waiting for you now and this night only comes once. Just once. Come here and give me a squish.
GRANDSON: I love you.
HOLLOWAY: Love you too. You be good now…and you remember what I told you. He’s not what you think. You keep looking up, never down. Never, ever down okay? Now go…chase this night, chase the shadows in the trees, a wizened witch behind a bush….dance into that dark and remember tonight.
GRANDSON: I will! Good night grandpa!
SFX: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS. LEAVES CRUNCHING.
HOLLOWAY: Goodbye son.
SFX: LEAVES RUSTLE. TRAIN WHISTLE IS HEARD. CREAK OF ROCKING CHAIR.
HOLLOWAY: (Groans as bones ache, in pain) They sleep not, except they have done mischief…
SFX: RAILROAD CROSSING SIGN GROANS AND WHEEZES TO LIFE. BELL RINGS MAKING AN EERIE ECHOING TONE. CRUNCH OF LEAVES AS HE MOVES TO THE TRACKS.
HOLLOWAY: And their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall…
SFX: WIND PICKS UP. TRAIN WHISTLE LOUDER. TRAIN HEARD IN DISTANCE.
HOLLOWAY: For they eat the bread of wickedness…
SFX: TRAIN THUNDERS IN THE DISTANCE. MOVING AT IMPOSSIBLE SPEED DOWN THE TRACKS.
HOLLOWAY: And they drink the wine of violence….
SFX: GUN LOADED. METAL CLICKS INTO PLACE.
HOLLOWAY: COME ON! RIGHT AT ME! I’VE BEEN WAITING! WAITING! YOU THINK I FORGOT? I REMEMBERED! I REMEMBERED! I REMEMBER HER!
SFX: TRAIN THUNDERS EVER CLOSER, NOT STOPPING.
HOLLOWAY: TAKE ME!
SFX: CONCUSION OF HEAT AND WIND ROARS PAST, BUT DEATH DOES NOT COME. THE SOUND FADES FROM THE WORLD. THE ONLY SOUND IS HIS BREATH AS STEAM SURROUNDS HIM. EERIE QUIET.
DARK: I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.
SFX: STEAM HISSES. TRAIN IS REVEALED ON TRACKS. GROANING IN METAL, THE MOAN OF LOST SOULS.
HOLLOWAY: John 8:51.
DARK: Quite so. A charming little verse I think, though not one of my old favorites. “The bread of wickedness” you said? Proverbs if I’m not mistaken, but I’m partial to some of the profound ones issued with frothing fury on the brow of the addled, good book thumping preachers of other years. What class they had, what marvelous pomposity…whose lecherous eyes and darkest thoughts were concealed in lily white virtue for whom to question that stark austerity would warrant a ride in the river or a place on the pyre. (Sigh) I miss those days. Thunder and damnation is not what it used to be.
HOLLOWAY: Dark. Mr. Dark. (Furious and defiant, spitting the words in his face) I remember you.
DARK: You do, don’t you? Hello again Will. How grand to see still the glinting defiance still there just beneath cataracts, yet deliciously trapped in a prison of rotting flesh and crumbling bone. It is, if you’ll pardon, always a pleasure to meet old friends again at the end of their book. How I love to be present to savor that final sentence.
HOLLOWAY: Where is she?
DARK: Whomever do you mean?
HOLLOWAY: You know very well who you smug bastard. I know you took her.
DARK: Took. Took. What an abrupt, inadequate, and inaccurate word. Now transform, transmogrify, even deconstruct however…far more accurate and…
HOLLOWAY: (Furious) WHERE IS SHE??
DARK: (Smirk and harumph). Hm. Very well, on your own soul be it. Though I do think all these years you’ve wasted away at this decomposing train station to look, to know, and to see, were a very tall price to pay for the goods you are about to see. (Loudly) MR. COOGER! Tell Zeena her services are required.
DARK: While your…acquaintance is acquired my compliments to your grandson on his skills with a blade. What a marvel he could be in our shadow show, a knife-throwing daredevil perhaps?
HOLLOWAY: You and your filth go anywhere near him…
DARK: And? (Silence) And WHAT Mr. Holloway? You’ve been impotent in more ways than one for decades now. You’re about as threatening as a single leaf dancing in the wind. Though I must say the pumpkin you two carved is quite charming.
HOLLOWAY: I’m done talking to you.
DARK: Oh? Then you’ll listen then because the curtain is about to open, and the final act is about to begin. You people take Halloween so literally. Before cheek scratchy masks and ponderous sacks of ill-gotten gains, it was All Hallow’s Eve, Samhain…words and a name given to a season that personifies the death of life. That first kiss of sweet icy death as summer’s promise falls as you all do eventually. It is the season of shadow, unchanged and in feeling undying since you crawled from the sea and swung through the trees. When the veil grows thin and every lustful thought, every murderous desire and guilty soul bleeds out into the world giving shape to shadow. It is our Autumn Garden filled with the plenty of years…a millennium buffet on which we gorge with Autumn’s plenty…a cornucopia of misery. And we FEED. Oh we FEED well. Speaking of which…LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! BOYS AND GIRLS OF ALL AGES! Cooger and Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show presents an oddity like no other, captured in the darkest depths of the Brazilian jungle (mutters) or West Virginia…may I present Zeena The Geek!
HOLLOWAY: What…what have you done to her…. (broken, stricken in shock)
DARK: Behold! Zeena shall now perform an act so monstrous, so vile that it is recommended that ladies shield their eyes, child leave the room and those with WEAK hearts turn away.
SFX: CHICKEN CLUCKING. ANGRY.
DARK: What’s this? A living chicken!
HOLLOWAY: Stop this…don’t…
DARK: A meal FIT for a queen to be sure! Oh that jaw! Look at the impossible MAW of ZEENA! She couldn’t possible…oh but SHE IS! EAT HEARTY MY DEAR!
SFX: CHICKEN PANICED. CRUNCHING OF BONES. CHICKEN SCREAMING. SILENCE. BLOOD DRIPPING.
DARK: SENSATIONAL! Take a bow!
SFX: VOMITING.
HOLLOWAY: (Sick) Mom no. What did you do?
DARK: A lifetime ago from your point of view on a sunny autumn day, a woman bought a ticket for our Ferris wheel. She had married young the first man to place a shaking finger on her thigh and after a vigorous evening in the thickets behind the rectory a cell flared to life. You Mr. Holloway. And so, the man with visions of better quarry and prospects was led to the chapel by a soon to be father-in-law with a shotgun at his back. Over time, her prospects dimmed, he took to drink and when he drank the possibilities of a life never lived turned to pure, unfettered rage. Year and year, hit after hit, what was a pretty young flower exploded into a cow stuffed into a seam splitting dress…
HOLLOWAY: YOU BASTARD!
SFX: PUNCH. HOLLOWAY IS KICKED TO THE GROUND.
DARK: I see the rage runs in the family. Careful now Will, you can’t afford many falls at your age. This cow in a dress sat on my Ferris wheel and it would not turn. Can you imagine that? As she wept into a plate filled with sugar coated fried dough, she told me her heart’s desire. She wanted to be a “looker” again she said, she loved to eat, but she wanted people to look at her and not laugh. Do you see? Well now they don’t laugh Mr. Holloway. They don’t laugh at all and she can eat whatever she likes.
HOLLOWAY: (Laughing slow…getting up off the ground with great pain).
DARK: That’s…unexpected, but I too am particularly tickled by the irony of her shadow.
HOLLOWAY: You know for someone who listens you don’t see shit.
DARK: See what Mr. Holloway?
SFX: THUNDER RUMBLES.
DARK: While it is nice to catch up, I’m afraid we’re on a tight schedule. I have an offer to make you…
HOLLOWAY: When she didn’t come home, I knew. I saw what you were…what that place was. It was wrong. You’re wrong.
DARK: What if you could be with her again, eh? All those years lost without mother’s embrace, her nurturing words…all back again, seen and felt through the eyes of a child. With but a word our carousel of lost time could be unpacked at the speed of thought.
HOLLOWAY: But I waited, I read, I learned, and I saw through you. Right through the heart of you and I knew what I had to do.
DARK: This is a final offer Will. No one meets me twice. Not anymore.
HOLLOWAY: You’re nothing but dust and shadow with not a foothold in this world except the ones you make. The lives you ruin and leave behind…tethers to wherever the hell you go to, to sleep, to wait. When you took her, when I did nothing and knew where she was and DID NOTHING a single slice of shadow on my soul. That was you.
DARK: I’m growing impatient Mr. Holloway. You can join us or alternatively Mr. Cooger can shatter your legs so you can live out your remaining days in a urine-soaked bed. What a lovely stench to accompany your grandson through his life…
HOLLOWAY: You’ve visited here before, but I’ll bet you know fuck all about Appalachia. Datura stramonium but locally we just call it jimson weed…though I (pained yell) like to call it Devil’s Snare. (laughs) That’s funny when you think about it. (Cries in pain).
DARK: (Pained) What…what have you done?
HOLLOWAY: It’s a powerful hallucinogen, but the seeds…the seeds are quite deadly. Made myself a little tea. They say it killed Nathanial Bacon himself during Bacon’s Rebellion…and I’ll bet you were still travelling…even back then. I’m snapping your tether.
DARK: (Angry but in pain) You think you’ve wounded me? I have more faces and forms on this earth than you could possibly imagine. You are a tether to this place, but I have so, so many others…this is nothing.
HOLLOWAY: I know (laughs) you do love to talk, but you still never see.
SFX: GUN CLICKS INTO LOADED POSITION
DARK: A gun Mr. Holloway. You have to be joking.
HOLLOWAY: (Pained and struggling to stay awake) Nope. Not a gun, but it sure does look like one don’t it. You know in the old days they used to say that photographs steal your soul. Each click of the shutter you lose a little bit more of you, pale copy after copy. A shadow of you forever trapped in 2 dimensions.
DARK: No…
HOLLOWAY: I’m done. Good and dying, but before I’m through we’re going on one final ride together.
DARK: MR. COOGER! STOP HIM!
SFX: RUNNING FOOTSTEPS. EXPLOSION OF POWDER AND LIGHT. TEARING OF REALITY.
SFX: WHOOSH AND IMPLOSION.
HOLLOWAY: This doesn’t fire bullets. It’s a chronophotographic gun. And it’s been anointed…every tear I shed on my wedding day, the birth of son and grandson…
DARK: ZEENA! FEED AND CRUNCH. SWALLOW HIM WHOLE. LET’S PUT YOUR SPAWN BACK INSIDE SHALL WE?
HOLLOWAY: Tears of love…not hate…I collected them all.
SFX: THUNDERING FOOTSTEPS.
HOLLOWAY: I love you Mom.
SFX: EXPLOSION OF POWDER AND LIGHT. TEARING OF REALITY. WHOOSH AND IMPLOSION.
DARK: No…no…stop! I’ll give you anything! Anything in creation can be yours!
HOLLOWAY: (Crushing pain) AHHhhhh….
SFX: COLLAPSE TO GROUND.
DARK: Back in the train! HURRY! WE MUST GO!
SFX: THUNDER AND LIGHTNING DRAWING CLOSER.
HOLLOWAY: I knew you’d come. I waited and I knew…when my Madie died I mourned her, I let myself mourn and give in to despair…because I knew you’d hear it. (laughs) You can’t help yourself…the Devil’s Snare… (coughing) Not long now…
SFX: RUNNING ON GRAVEL. CLAMBERING ON METAL AS DARK CLIMBS INTO THE LOCOMOTIVE.
DARK: You’re FINISHED you old fool. I’m going to run you down…smear you down the tracks. With a bit of luck your grandson will greet us up ahead. I wonder what will happen to his mind when old grandad’s head winks at him as we creep by, smashed between our bloody grill. Perhaps I’ll scoop him up and feed him nightmares…you two! KILL HIM! KILL HIM NOW!
SFX: EXPLOSION OF POWDER AND LIGHT. TEARING OF REALITY. WHOOSH AND IMPLOSION.
HOLLOWAY: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11…every summer day with my feet in the grass when I cried just to be alive…every happy tear with friends.
DARK: (Furious) ENOUGH! YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ME!
SFX: TRAIN WHISTLE. TRAIN STARTS TO MOVE.
HOLLOWAY: (Death rattle) you’re….right…but…love…love kills you.
SFX: TRIGGER SNAPPED. FINAL EXPLOSION OF POWDER AND LIGHT. THE TRAIN SQUEELS IN PROTEST, TEARING, GRINDING, LIGHTNING, THUNDER AND WIND.
DARK: THIS IS ONE FORM…ONE FORM…DIE! DIEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
SFX: VOICE GROWS TO A HIGH-PITCHED KEENING WAIL. IMPLOSION OF SOUND. RATTLE AS GUN DROPS THE GROUND. BODY COLLAPSES.
HOLLOWAY: (Long exhale one final breath and then silence).
MEDIA: DARK’S REQUIEM
SCENE 2: EXT. POINT PLEASANT. DAY.
JOHNS (V.O.): I used to love the autumn, not now…but how it used to be. When the greens would erupt with the palette so vibrant, so colorful…it would remind me of my granddad. I know, I know…but that last week of his life it was like he wasn’t sick at all. He carried me on his shoulders as they fell from the sky and then one morning he was just gone. Fall is like that, it’s an explosion of color and light, one last gasp of energy from all the pent-up grass scented, beach sand floorboard littered, firefly dancing days and nights. And then, all the color fades from the world and the ice creeps in. A cold so deep that it burns…I never understood that. You know when people are getting hypothermia one of the final stages is that they feel like they’re burning up Kori. Can you believe that? There are stories of search parties finding people stripped down to their underwear, frozen solid, having taken everything off because they were so hot. (Pause and sigh, scared) I feel cold. Every day. Something’s coming…I’ve known that for a long time and I know we’ve weathered it all, but this is something worse. We were the last defense, the last bastion to maintain law and order, but for the very first time my eyes are open. I know it was a lie, his lies, his illusion but I can’t get past it. I have to leave for a while. No, don’t interrupt…because I don’t even know who I am anymore. What I’ve done…and what I have to do, I don’t want you to see me like that. I don’t even like seeing me like that. I didn’t tell you everything. It started with the dust…no. Really it was before then. It started with Simon because everything always does. People think that evil is something you do. Truth of it is, evil is always there, always hungry, ever present, and it waits…quietly for you to call it.
SFX: CRICKETS CHIRPING. TOSSING AND TURNING OF SHEETS. ECHOING VOICES AS SIMON WAKES UP FROM A NIGHTMARE.
MEDIA: PIPBOY RADIO PLAYS QUIETLY SPOOKY MUSIC.
SIMON: No….no….wait….come back. DON’T LEAVE ME! Ahh… (panting)….
SFX: HAMMERING NOISES. PANIC BREATHING.
SIMON: Jesus Christ…what…a nightmare.
BISHOP (V.O.): …and that little spooooopy number goes out to a Cultist Wrathwing named…umm…Biff out there at Point Pleasant. Listeners should be reminded that unless you’d like your life’s blood spilled in supplication to a 6-foot-tall moth this Halloween, best be steering clear of Point Pleasant starting tonight folks. Though truth be told the Mothman Parade is a sight to behold I’m told. Beware because it’s D…D….DEVIL’S NIGHT! An evening of Mischief and Mayhem. Rumors from the Aristocrats at the Whitespring is that they’ve taken measures to ensure that the explosive chaotic pranks and mayhem of year’s past WON’T be happening again. This is your dulcet dynamo on the deck Charles Bishop bringing you all the sounds of the season hear on RBTS Radio. Up next a little number that will have you questioning your state of being. It’s Autumn Day and the Fester Five with their hit single, “I kissed a ghoul and I kind of liked it…”
SOLOMON: You there! Watch the rib cage! This isn’t some kind of Moth Enthusiast CAMP from those wretched Vault Dwellers, this is a glorious display of fealty and dark invocation to our mothy overlord. It must be perfection. Acolyte Fred! What is that supposed to be?
SIMON: (to himself) Solomon?
FRED: D’uhhh…a feeding trough with 30 gallons of blood?
SOLOMON: 30? 30?
DAVE: I told him we needed at least 60 boss.
FRED: No, you didn’t.
DAVE: Yeah, I did…
FRED: Hey! Stop throwing blood on me! That’s for later!
SOLOMON: Enough fools! We will need at least twice that for my lord to feast upon to have enough arcane power to return to rend the veil of reality itself and descend into the dimensions of madness. ACOLYTE DAVE WHAT ARE YU DOING?
DAVE: Makin’ some eggs boss I’m hungry.
SOLOMON: THOSE ARE HIS EGGS ARE YOU INSANE?
DAVE: No. I’m Appalachian boss.
SOLOMON: Sweet Mothman help me…
SFX: PANTS ZIPPED. SLEEPING BAG RUSTLE. TENT UNZIPPED.
SIMON: What the?
SOLOMON: Ah! Young Mr. Rex.
FRED: Oh! I’ll bet he has LOTS of blood Dave!
DAVE: Lots and lots of blood Fred! Let’s skin him!
SOLOMON: Leave me him be…I’m still on his retainer.
FRED: Awwww…welp. Come on Dave, let’s go find some blood elsewhere. I think I saw a pink castle CAMP back there someone built. They’re probably standing still inside hoping people will buy their junk.
DAVE: Should I bring the smelly boom boom meat?
FRED: Oh yeah! Oh yeah! Let’s blow it up!
SOLOMON: (Sigh) compliments of the season to you.
SIMON: What’s going on here?
SOLOMON: A little festival to celebrate the Great Ones birthday. We are calling home the Acolytes far and wide for a great festival in his honor. It’ll be spectacular…chants and invocation, ritual sacrifice of virginal Vault dwellers, arcane rights that will rend reality and open a portal to the dark places where the Elder Ones sleep so He Who Devours Clothing In Closets may return to the Dimension of Madness. There also will be a hot and cold buffet with cucumber sandwiches and festive clogging. I made candy apples.
SIMON: Uhh…that sounds great, but no thanks. I need to move on. Holidays around here tend to go tit’s up. I’m heading to a silo to hide for the next few days.
SFX: TENT POLE SNAPPING. ZIPPING UP.
SOLOMON: Well, suit yourself…however if you change….your…hmm…
SIMON: What?
SOLOMON: Your shadow.
SIMON: What about it?
SOLOMON: It wasn’t there for a moment.
SIMON: (Laughs) Clouds do happen Solomon.
SOLOMON: That they do…so do things from below. I bid you good day.
SIMON: (Laugh) Weirdo…
SOLOMON: Oh! One last thing. Tell that insane fool in the graveyard over there he has an hour left. I shan’t be responsible for his safety once the binding pyres are lit. I’ve grown weary of his questions.
SIMON: Who? Solomon? (Sighs) Right…on we go.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS ON STONE. CHANTING IN DISTANCE. LEAVES RUSTLE.
BALDRICK: Scans indicate tracks in the dirt Sir.
ARCHIVIST: What about the tombstones?
BALDRICK: Checking…surface scans indicate a concentration of quartz, sericite, and trace minerals.
ARCHIVIST: Well, there’s no doubt about it Baldrick, it’s plain ordinary weather beaten old slate. Strange…
SIMON: Excuse me?
ARCHIVIST: No! For pity’s sake I don’t have any light bulbs! Oh! So sorry son, I thought you were that cult leader.
SIMON: Ah. That would be Solomon, Mothman Cult Leader and part time public defendant. He uhh…wanted to let you know you have an hour left. They’ll be lighting the fires and conducting a ritual that very probably won’t be good, so like me, it’s best to clear off.
ARCHIVIST: Quite right, quite right. Full moon tonight, they’ll be going on with that “O Bright One, we bid thee…” nonsense. Bloody mess if you ask me. The Mothman is about as supernatural as a box of Sugar Bombs.
SIMON: You seem to know a lot about it.
ARCHIVIST: As I should if I’m worth my weight in title. Oh! Heavens me where are my manners. I’m Dolos, amateur Archivist, little known librarian, and part time preserver of knowledge of the old world.
SIMON: Simon, Simon Rex. Nice to meet you.
ARCHIVIST: And this currently occupied floating fella over my shoulder is my companion and good friend Baldrick.
BALDRICK: Good day young master. Sir, if you intend on exploring Site D before nightfall we should be pressing on.
ARCHIVIST: Oh dear! Right you are. But we must come back here after the bulk of those cultists clear off. The Judge was here for a reason.
SIMON: The Judge? He was here?
ARCHIVIST: Hmmm…oh you know him, do you?
SIMON: We’ve had some…dealings. I steer clear of him if I can help it. Last I checked he still had a bounty on me.
ARCHIVIST: You didn’t kill his cow, did you?
SIMON: Good lord no, I got tangled up with the Overseer when she…well let’s just say I’m looking for something he’d rather I not find.
ARCHIVIST: Hmm…mysterious. Most mysterious. But quite right, keep your cards close you don’t know me from a hole in the ground. (Laughs) Which I suppose is apropos for a cemetery eh Baldrick?
BALDRICK: Ugh...not the puns again. I’ll collect the rubbings and fetch your satchel sir.
ARCHIVIST: Tell me son, look at this cemetery. What do you see?
SIMON: What am I looking for?
ARCHIVIST: What do you see? Take your time.
SIMON: It’s a cemetery…old.
ARCHIVIST: Yes, quite old…how do you know?
SIMON: Well, the tombstones…they’re old, incredibly old…battered, spalled and broken with dates going back to the 1700s.
ARCHIVIST: Yes! Excellent! What else?
SIMON: Umm…two sections. 19 tombstones…5 obelisks and 5 of the taller tombstones have a skull and crossbones.
ARCHIVIST: But those are just numbers. You’re looking at what you’re meant to. What do you see?
SIMON: Wait…the carvings. They’re almost all identical. Some of them have been weathered for the writing to be faded, but…yes…it’s the same writing just reversed. Thomas Webb died 1769.
ARCHIVIST: Excellent! It took some close reading and enhancement from some rubbings but it reads, “Here lies deposited the Remains of Mr. Thomas Webb who died very suddenly much lamented ye 8th July 1769. Aged 33 Years. He was born in the City of Glocester in England. This stone the hand of social friendship rears whose generous griefs supply a parents tears. Could friendly wishes stay ye transient breath. A kind companion had not tasted Death.”
SIMON: This isn’t a real cemetery. What is it?
ARCHIVIST: An excellent question from an inquisitive mind. That is the very quandary I found myself in after learning from the priest that the Judge and his Judiciary Guard had been observed moving crates and materials out of that graveyard as the cultists were taking Point Pleasant. A few other observations you wouldn’t spot with the naked eye…this is Boston slate, and there has never been a Thomas Webb in West Virginia, because Point Pleasant was only settled in 1794.
SIMON: Some kind of hidden chamber or base?
BALDRICK: We must depart sir.
ARCHIVIST: Very probably. Look, we’re headed over to a place that my back teeth have been itching to explore as I’ve chasing down some ancient tomes that at this point are reaching the end of their shelf life without proper protection and preservation. Care to tag along? With Cultists on one side, the Judge on the other and Halloween just around the corner to be candid Baldrick here isn’t exactly a commando in a combat situation.
SIMON: Thanks, but I’m…
DUST WITCH: (Eerie whisper) Still your tongue and go with he…go…go…gooooooooo.
SIMON: You know what? Sure. Though to be fair molerats seems to be my lot in life. So, expect a horde of them to chase us most of the way there.
ARCHIVIST: It’s decided. Off we go to Site D! To Moundsville we go and the National Museum of the Paranormal!
SIMON: Wait…the WHAT??
SCENE 4: EXT. CHARLESTON. DAY.
SFX: WIND AND LEAVES. CRUNCH OF GRAVEL.
JOHNS: …predominantly your beat is going to be Charleston but depending on whatever new kind of nightmare pops up around here, we often have to move people around. The Mire is an ongoing problem keeping the strangler hearts from regaining a foothold. Today starts 48 hours of Hell around here. Devil’s Night chaos and then Halloween things usually go south for reasons beyond understand. The Aristocrats at the Whitespring start radioing in complaining about every Tom, Dick and Harry blowing shit up, settings fires everywhere and leaving forks stuck in the damned lawn.
WILLIAMS: (Fondly) Yeah…those were the days. I miss Mischief Night.
SFX: CORK PULLED. DRINKING NOISE.
JOHNS: I’ll just pretend I didn’t hear that. You wear that badge you set a higher standard. Or whatever passes for one around here.
WILLIAMS: A little early for drinking, isn’t it?
JOHNS: (Angry) It’s a little early for a lot of things, mouthing off isn’t one of them.
WILLIAMS: Got it.
JOHNS: Look, be prepared that some days are harder than others to be the paragon of virtue. There are plenty of days when I just want to pump bullets into the Raiders as opposed to feeding them three meals a day.
WILLIAMS: Yeah, sometimes it be like that.
JOHNS: Your uhhh friend White is really grinding on Lt. Kori’s patience. Have a word with him will yah? Make sure this is something he really want to do this.
WILLIAMS: (Laughs) His heart’s in the right place. The exploding pumpkin prank was a bit too far. He’s definitely on board.
SFX: RADIO STATIC
KORI (V.O.): Connor? You there?
JOHNS: Too early in the morning for call signs Kori?
KORI (V.O.): Someone put a pumpkin in the toilet. I’m not in the mood.
JOHNS: (Laughing) 10-4. What’s up?
KORI (V.O.): You still up on Manor Drive?
JOHNS: Yeah, we’re just finishing up the loop of his beat.
KORI (V.O.): Someone called in an attack, just north of Overlook Cabin. Abandoned field just off the road.
JOHNS: We’ll check it in…err out. Almost there any who.
KORI (V.O.): You’re already drinking, aren’t you?
JOHNS: What?
KORI (V.O.): God damn it Connor. We’ll talk about it later.
JOHNS: Sure. Yeah…whatever.
WILLIAMS: Problems in paradise?
JOHNS: Shut your god damned mouth rookie. Get your piece out…we have no idea what we’re walking into here.
SFX: CRUNCHING LEAVES.
WILLIAMS: What the hell…what happened here?
JOHNS: I don’t know.
WILLIAMS: Look like there a fire or something. Look here, lightning strike maybe?
JOHNS: Yeah maybe. Listen.
WILLIAMS: What?
JOHNS: Everything stopped. No crickets…birds, nothing.
WILLIAMS: Eye of the storm.
JOHN: What?
WILLIAMS: Eye of the storm. My Dad was a weather nut, Vault-Tec certified meteorologist, which is kind of pointless when you think about it. Not like he could do anything useful with that in a Vault. He talked about how still it was in the eye of the storm, just before the back half would hit and do the most damage.
JOHN: I don’t like it here. Let’s check out that wrecked Ferris wheel over there and get the hell out of here. I’m not seeing anybody around.
WILLIAMS: What is this stuff all over the ground?
JOHNS: Some kind of powder. Ashes? No…it’s dust…
WILLIAMS: Grass is kind of high here…watch your step.
JOHNS: I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING ROOKIE. You watch yours.
WILLIAMS: There’s something in the weeds here.
SFX: WEEDS RUSTLE. METAL GROANS.
JOHNS: Eyes on your surroundings! Leave that be!
WILLIAMS: No (straining) I’ve almost got it…
SFX: METAL TEARS FREE. BODY THUDS.
WILLIAMS: Owwww…fuck that hurts. Damn it. Sliced my hand.
JOHNS: DAMN IT! I told you to leave it.
WILLIAMS: Hey…look at that.
JOHNS: Old broken sign…looks almost like a circus or carnival marquee Something R AND DARK’S PANDEMONIUM SHADOW SHOW. Rest of it is burned off and torn.
SFX: GRASS SWISHES. BREEZE LIGHTLY BLOWS AND TRAIN WHISTLE IS HEARD IN THE DISTANCE.
JOHNS: Did you hear that?
WILLIAMS: Damn that burns…
JOHNS: Better wrap that…this stuff is all over your hand. Gonna get a free ticket to Doc Martin’s.
WILLIAMS: This used to be a carnival or something?
JOHNS: I dunno…stay there. Looks like there’s some debris over there.
SFX: SWISHING GRASS. EERIE WIND. CROW CAWS.
JOHNS: Something…something’s wrong with this place.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS RUNNING.
JOHNS: Hey! You there! STOP! NEW RESPONDERS! I SAID STOP!
SFX: RUNNING.
SFX: EARTH RUMBLES. WOOD AND GLASS CRASH. JOHNS FALLS INTO UNDERGROUND ROOM.
JOHNS: AHHHH! DAMN IT!
WILLIAMS: Commander! Commander are you all right! Hang on! I’m coming!
SFX: PIPBOY LIGHT SWITCHES ON.
JOHNS: (Yelling) I’m fine. Fell into this hole. Looks like it was part of a mirror maze.
SFX: CRUNCHING GLASS.
SFX: RADIO.
JOHNS: Kori? Kori come in.
SFX: RADIO STATIC.
JOHNS: Damn it.
SFX: CRUNCHING GLASS.
JOHNS: This place…so cold…
WILLIAMS: Are you there yet? Do you see the door?
JOHNS: Door?
WILLIAMS: (Voice funny and creepy) The door. Open it. Open the door.
JOHNS: I…I see a door. There’s a key in it.
WILLIAMS: Just a little further. You’ll be free.
JOHNS: Is this the way out?
WILLIAMS: (Suddenly voice close from behind) The door. Open the door.
SFX: EERIE WHISPERING.
SFX: KEY SLOWLY TURNS AND UNLOCKS. HEAVY DOOR SWINGS OPEN RELEASING A BURST OF FOUL AIR.
JOHNS: Ugh…smells like something died down here. This isn’t the way out…it’s just a mirror room. What’s that light?
SFX: WHISPERING LOUDER. VOICES ECHO AROUND.
JOHNS: Is someone there?
DUST WITCH: Twice bound soldier, fallen free…open thy mind and release meeeeeee…..
JOHNS: What…no…no….
DUST WITCH: The looking glass sees, the reflection of thee…
SFX: WIND WHIPS. GLASS MELTS.
JOHNS: The mirror…it’s….moving…flowing….get off me. WILLIAMS! WILLIAMS!
DUST WITCH: I see…I see your tomorrows and all your yesterdays…ohhhh the blood in the mud, the bride thrice denied….the fire…you burn….the fire in the ice and the Great Darkness comes! Just a little closer…blood bound door…a taste of life…THE DOOOOR OPENSSSSS!
JOHNS: (Gurgling) My mouth….flowing…WILLIA (coughing choking)
SFX: GUNSHOT AND SHATTERING OF GLASS.
DUST WITCH: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
SFX: WIND EXPLODES OUTWARD.
SLICK WILLY: Oh no you don’t, you heathen bitch! COME ON KID! RUN! RUN LIKE THE DEVIL!
SFX: SCRAMBLING UP.
DUST WITCH: FEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDD. FEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDD.
JOHNS: WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!
SLICKY WILLY: Quit your yapping and run like the wind! THIS WAY! OUT HERE!
SFX: WIND AND LEAVES RAGE AS THE GROUND HEAVES UPWARD.
SFX: RUNNING.
DUST WITCH: (Demonic voice) FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
JOHNS: WILLIAMS?! WILLIAMS?
SLICK WILLY: JUST A LITTLE FURTHER! TO THE ROAD!
JOHNS: It’s gaining on us!
SFX: CONCUSSION OF AIR. WIND SILENCES AND RETURNS TO NORMAL.
JOHNS: (Panting) What….what was that?
SLICK WILLY: The Witch. Olllll Willy knew. Ol’ Willy REMEMBERED! Let’s see her work her black magics from there. Sodium chloride sonny, all the salt you can muster…doing something other than pouring out the mouths of people in these parts. She’s stuck in there like a fly in molasses hoooo wheee!
JOHN: Witch? WILLIAMS! Where the hell did he go?
SLICK WILLY: The kid in the uniform? He’s plum scampered off. But you best be steering clear of him. He has the gray in his eyes…he’s hers now. That means trouble.
JOHN: Where are you going?
SLICK WILLY: To scare up some o’ the Ol Tesla Rifles. You best be tellin’ your folks to saddle up. If she’s here….he’ll be on her tail bringing all of hellfire and temptation with him.
JOHN: STOP! Who are you talking about? Willy! WILLY! Damn it.
SFX: RADIO.
JOHN: Kori come in.
KORI: What??
JOHN: Enough. This is serious. I need a squad down here right now. We have….(scared) some kind of problem.
KORI: (Concerned) Connor? What is it? What’s wrong?
JOHN: Just send them. Suit up. I need a perimeter. We need to keep this contained.
KORI: Okay. Give us an hour. We’ll be there. I’m coming too. HQ out.
SFX: WIND. ANGRY WAILING.
DUST WITCH: Ahhhhhhhhhhhh…. (haunted, creepy wailing continues)
JOHN: Better hurry.
SFX: SLOW FADE AWAY…CRICKETS CHIRP…LEAVES STIR.
DUST WITCH: Hear me and attend, the ring…a break in the ring…let me bleed into the places between…
WILLIAMS: Break the ring…break the ring…
SFX: SCUFF IN THE SAND AS THE SALT RING BREAKS. MAGICAL VIBRATION IS HEARD AND A GUST OF FOUL WIND FLASHES PAST HIM.
SCENE 5: INT. RUSTY PICK.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS ON WOOD. WATER FLOWING IN TUB IS HEARD.
PATSY: (sing) I tollllddd the witch doctor I was in love with you…..
I told the witch doctor I was in love with you….
SFX: SQUEEKY FAUCET TURNS OFF WATER. BOARD CREAKS.
PATSY: Moose? (Listens) Punch if that’s you I told you if I catch you creeping on me in the tub one more time I swear to god I’ll have your head in a jar. Hello?
(Singing) And then the witch doctor he told me what to do
He said that Ooh eeh ooh aah aah….
ooo little warm…
SFX: TUB SPLASHING. CURTAIN CLOSED.
(Singing)Ting tang wallawalla bingbang
(Sighs) 20 minutes of pure, warm…comfort…
SFX: BOARD CREAKS.
PATSY: I’m serious you guys cut it out! (Listens) Christ I can’t get a minute away without some bullshit nonsense. (Sighs)
MEDIA: TENSE MUSIC.
PATSY: (Humming Witch Doctor)
SFX: QUIET FOOTSTEPS.
PUNCH: (Heavy mouth breathing)
PATSY: (Humming Witch Doctor)
SFX: BOARD CREAK.
PATSY: M….Moose?
SFX: CURTAIN DRAWN BACK VIOLENTLY.
PUNCH: (Imitating the Psycho show scene music pooly) REEEE REEEEE REEEEEEEEEE! STABBY STAB! (Laughs)
PATSY: PUNCH! GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!
PUNCH: Punch get spices. You make good stew with mushrooms and bone broth.
MOOSE: (Laughing) Good one bro!
PUNCH: Punch do Hell ween good?
MOOSE: Yeah bro! It’s all about those pranks today and tonight! Mischief Night dude! Did you finish up that springboard trap in the Haunted House maze?
PUNCH: Uh huh! Punch do! Punch do. Boing! TSSSHHHHH! AHHHHH! Down down the hole!
PATSY: What are you two up to now?
MOOSE: We setup a Haunted House in the bar. It’s legit! Spooky lights and fog machines all themed with a cool story about a headless miner. Just when they see the exit we trigger a springboard to blow out the floor and drop them into a shoot that then yeets them out and over the mountain out back. It’s hilarious.
PATSY: Okay whatever. Just clean up afterward…and see if you can get me some wood Moose, if you can manage to find it.
MOOSE: Jeez…come on Punch dude.
SFX: WALKING AWAY.
PUNCH: Meatbag friend not like Trick or Teet?
MOOSE: I don’t know dude…she’s been ragging on me a lot for months now…
SFX: DOOR OPENS.
BETSY: HEY! ASSHOLES!
MOOSE: Oh! Uhhh..well this is awkward. How’s it hangin’ Betsy?
BETSY: Oh gee I don’t know Moose! I just walked all the way from the Vault after dying in your septic tank trap you set up by the door here.
SFX: SHOTGUN COCKED.
BETSY: And I’m sick of this cap. Open the register!
PUNCH: HEY! THOSE PUNCH SHINIES!
BETSY: So help me mutie I’ll shoot you square in the crotch. REGISTER. NOW!
MOOSE: Chill Betsy! It was an accident! Look Patsy was just having a bad day. No hard feelings dude…
SFX: SHOTGUN BLAST. CHANDELIER BLOWS APART.
MOOSE: Geez! Holy crap.
BETSY: Maybe you two are hard of hearing. Let’s get with the kerrrrrching!
PUNCH: Moose want Punch smash?
MOOSE: Nah dude, she’s due.
SFX: CASH REGISTER DINGS.
MOOSE: Have at it.
BETSY: There’s nothing here.
MOOSE: No kidding dude.
BETSY: Where’s your caps? In a safe?
PUNCH: Punch buy yum yums.
MOOSE: Yeah we kind of drink our profits (laughs)
BETSY: I don’t believe this…okay fine…where is she? Where’s Patsy?
SFX: DOOR OPENS.
CHAD: Hey gang! The Chad’s home! Whoops…who setup a trap here? Better trip it.
SFX: TRAP TRIGGERS. FLOOR BREAKS.
BETSY: NOT AGAIIIIINNNNNN YOU BASSSTARDSSSSSSSSS
SFX: THUD
DOC: Oh my! Who was that?
MOOSE: Just some whack job Doc! Nothing to worry about.
CHAD: Hey this place looks great! Is the kid okay?
PUNCH: Punch watch. Keep safe.
MOOSE: Yeah she’s fine. She’s been real quiet. Ran out of sedative juice, so we gave her like 500 pieces of Halloween candy after Punch and I killed a bunch of losers down at Watoga High doing some pre Halloween cosplay crap. Knocked her right out.
PUNCH: Doc make friend better?
DOC: Well we’ll see…
CHAD: Right downstairs here dude.
SFX: STAIRS NOISES.
CHAD: Hey you got this place lookin’ great dude! Totally spook central.
SFX: CHAINS UNDONE. DOOR UNLOCKED.
ELLA: (tired) …and the Three Bears came home and said, who is this blonde tramp who ate our oatmeal. So they found her sleeping in one of their beds and disembowled her and made a throw rug. The end. Tee hee!
MOOSE: We gave her warm blankie.
ELLA: And I told her stories that would tickle any fanny…time to sleep now and dream of the dark places. Wheeeee! (Snoring)
DOC: Errr…right. What’s with the doll?
CHAD: Look dude, just don’t piss it off. What do we gotta do?
DOC: Let’s setup the equipment right here.
CHAD: What’s the deal Doc?
DOC: Well normally all we would’ve needed is a field blood transfusion kit, heck even an anticoagulant and gravity would do, but this is far, far more complicated and riskier. To put it simply, this unit is going to flush out red cells, white cells, plasma…leaving fluid as we infuse your healthy red cells, white cells and plasma. It has to go…all of it, if this has a chance of working. She’s a kid, otherwise this would be a guaranteed fatality for you and to be candid son I’m not too sure we won’t get a flatline out of you yet.
CHAD: Doesn’t matter. I have an insurance policy…she…doesn’t. Let’s go.
DOC: No time like the present then…sleeve up…and lie down here. I’m going to need you to stay calm and keep slow, regular breaths and stay awake.
SFX: KNOCK ON DOOR.
CHAD: Who the fuck knocks before barging in here? Grab that would you Punch?
PUNCH: Punch go see! Maybe sell some pumpkin brew!
SFX: CLOMPING UP STAIRS.
SFX: KNOCK ON DOOR.
PUNCH: Good bye! Uhhhh…helloo?
SFX: DOOR OPENS.
PUNCH: Uhhh….anyone home? Pumpkin brew! 15 caps! Hellloooo?
SFX: GUST OF WIND AND WHISPERING BLOWS IN. FLOOR SHAKES.
ELLA: No…..no…..the pickity witch…the picket witch….stop her! Stop her!
MOOSE: What’s her problem?
SFX: LIGHTS FLICKER OUT. EERIE WHISPERING.
ELLA: Feral child small and lean, wake from dreams and pick bones cleannnnnnnnnnn! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
SFX: WIND WHIPS ROOM.
DOC: What in the hell?
SUSIE: (Mumbling awake) killlllllllllll killllllllllll rarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr notttttt ussssssssssssss! RARRRRRR!
SFX: THRASHING.
CHAD: Calm down kid! MOOSE!
MOOSE: On it! Come on kid….hold still…
SFX: THRASHING CONTINUES.
SFX: MACHINE TOPPLES AND SMASHES ON FLOOR. CIRCUITS EXPLODE.
DOC: God damn it! No!
ELLA: (Angry slightly demonic voice as she grapples with the witch) Youuuuu….gettt….outtttt….offffff….myyyyy fannnnnyyyyyyyyy!
DUST WITCH: (Angry moaning and yelling)
MOOSE: Hold on! Tranqing her!
SFX: INJECTION NOISE.
SFX: WIND RECEEDES. DOOR IS HEARD SLAMMING ABOVE.
CHAD: What was that? Is it okay?
DOC: No….it’s finished.
CHAD: Can’t you fix it?
DOC: I’m a doctor…this is wiring and electrical engineering well beyond me son.
CHAD: Lemme see dude I’m handy with this stuff.
DOC: No, it’s no good…there’s only a handful of things that I knew existed around here. It’s too complex to cobble together and you’d never be able to program it.
CHAD: Well what the hell do we do now?
DOC: The only chance in hell you have of finding another would be a Vault. Your best bet is 76, but there’s no way back in. I know, I’ve tried before when things got bad…there’s a goldmine of medical supplies in there I could’ve used.
CHAD: I…I’ll figure it out. Is okay Moose…think you can leave her be now.
SFX: KISS ON FOREHEAD.
CHAD: (Whispers in ear) I’ll be back…maybe we can go trick or treating huh? (Voice breaking) Please don’t let go.
DOC: That’s all I can do here for now, I need to head over to the Red Sloe. Keep her sedated…and…maybe salt the doorways.
MOOSE: Salt?
DOC: Just…humor me…
SCENE 6: INT. PARANORMAL MUSEUM. NIGHT.
SFX: RATTLING DOOR.
SIMON: What are you doing?
ARCHIVIST: It’s a level 3 lock…this might take a bit.
SFX: SMASH WINDOW. LOCK TURNED.
SIMON: Or we could just do that.
ARCHIVIST: I….huh. Well isn’t that the darndest thing.
BALDRICK: I’ll stand guard sir in case we have some slightly feral guests.
ARCHIVIST: Good man Baldrick. Welp…in we go.
SFX: DOOR OPENED. CREEPY ATMOSPHERE. DUST SIFTING DOWN FROM CEILING. PIPBOY FLASHLIGHTS SWITCH ON.
SIMON: Archive of the Afterlife, see the wonders of the National Museum of the Paranormal. So, what’s the story with this place?
ARCHIVIST: Ahhh…well that’s an interesting tale. I take you’ve dropped by the Eastern Regional Penitentiary at some point?
SIMON: Mad Dog Malone hates me with every fiber of his being.
ARCHIVIST: Well I suppose it’s better than malfunctioning Prison Marshalls riddling you with holes while your minding your own business…but I digress. In its heyday it sent over 100 prisoners to the red hot beyond, first by hanging and then via electric chair with the morbidly humorous name “Old Sparky”. The place was supposedly incredibly haunted and none was more interested in the history and supernatural of the place than a prison guard named Steve Cameron. He began an obsessive collection of cursed, haunted and macabre objects from all the place and opened the place in 2011.
SIMON: What exactly are we looking for?
ARCHIVIST: Books my boy, books! Knowledge…it’s all about knowledge.
SIMON: This place is huge…and…more than a little creepy. Ouiji boards, mirrors, furniture…this is like an antiques shop for the damned.
ARCHIVIST: Prices are likely a killer (chuckle)…ah! What have we here…
SFX: GLASS CASE SMASH.
SIMON: Well, that’s one way to open it.
ARCHIVIST: This my boy is the Mallus Maleficarum, hammer of the witches…the most complete compendium of detection and methods of dispatch for practitioners of the dark arts ever compiled.
SIMON: Yeah…I’ve had my fair share of witches…do you believe in this stuff?
ARCHIVIST: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” Lovecraft wrote. I would add that it is the light of knowledge shone into the dark, that all is revealed. If we remained fearful of nature’s fire we never would’ve mastered it.
SIMON: I’m surprised no one has scavved this place. Doesn’t that strike you as odd? It’s pristine in here.
ARCHIVIST: Hmm…not entirely. Broken display case. “Ella. Uncertain origin. Stay back, do not approach. Do not remove.”
SIMON: Not to be rude or anything but I’m surprised we’ve never crossed paths before.
ARCHIVIST: Ah! Well, my roots are here, go back generations, but before the Great War I took up a job over in Columbus. Underground document storage, government files, historical ephemera that kind of thing. Decided to play catch up on cataloging one Saturday morning and it’s about the most well-paid overtime I ever had. Took me a good few months to dig out. After that, one year bled into another…but it’s had its good moments.
SIMON: Trying to save all this stuff is…altruistic…I’ve surprised you held on to that considering how long you’ve been out here.
ARCHIVIST: Faith. Everyone has to have it in some form or another. It’s not always in what lies above, sometimes it’s in an ideal, or a cause, science…or even just people. What do you believe in?
SIMON: I…honestly don’t know.
ARCHIVIST: And that right there is the most important question you’ll ever have to answer for yourself. Dark is the soul that is without faith in anything…it’s a road cast in shadow.
SFX: FLAME IN THE DISTANCE.
SFX: LASER RIFLE CHARGE.
ARCHIVIST: Over there. Who is that? Is someone there?
SIMON: We…should go…
ARCHIVIST: What is that? Is this a joke? Well, I’ll be…it’s a jack-o-lantern…up here. Mind the stairs…they are a little cluttered.
SIMON: I’m beginning to think this was a mistake.
ARCHIVIST: Bah. Some raider playing a joke. Looks like an archive up ahead. Jackpot my dear boy! Jackpot! Breath deep. Smell that?
SIMON: Smell what?
ARCHIVIST: Worn leather, delicate papers that crossed oceans on a sun chair, adorned flickering mantels on Christmas Eve’s and stained by generations of teas, coffees, wine and cocoa. It is the vanilla scent of the jackpot.
SFX: EERIE WIND
SIMON: Hello?
ARCHIVIST: Look at this! Here, hold the laser rifle.
SFX: EERIE WHISPER. BOOK FALLS.
SFX: LASER RIFLE FIRE.
SIMON: Ah! Jeez.
ARCHIVIST: Good lord! There’s no one in here. Get a grip kid. I…I don’t believe this. This is an original Dean’s New Book of Dissolving Scenes, 1861…one of the very first forms of a pop-up book. Look…see…you pull the tab and the scenes change. This is remarkable…goodness, goodness…mind you this note here says it was found in the home of a quadruple homicide…but still…
SFX: FOOTSTEPS ECHO AS SIMON FOLLOWS WHISPERING.
SIMON: H…hello?
SFX: FAINT TRAIN WHISTLE. CARNIVAL MUSIC. CABINET RATTLES.
SIMON: What is that?
SFX: FOOTSTEPS.
ARCHIVIST: Simon? What…on earth…
SFX: CABINET RATTLES LOUDER. EERIE WHISPERING.
SIMON: I think someone’s in there…yes…yes I’m here. How did you get in there?
ARCHIVIST: Who are you talking to?
SIMON: Yes, we can. My shadow is gone.
ARCHIVIST: There’s no one there…
SIMON: My shadow is gone. Do you have it? I will. One minute…I’ll get you out. You must be so scared. So lonely…so hungry.
SFX: HANDLE IS SMASHED. CABINET OPENED. GUST OF WIND AND WAILING.
ARCHIVIST: What is that…some kind of gun? No…it has a projection disk on it. Simon? Kid?
SFX: SNAPPING FINGERS.
SIMON: Huh? What happened?
ARCHIVIST: You spaced out there for a moment. You okay?
SIMON: Yeah…I think so. What is this?
ARCHIVIST: I have no idea and that’s saying something. There’s some kind of drum magazine here…but..
SFX: METAL CLICK.
ARCHIVIST: I’ll be…there’s a image plate here! Well…hmm….this is odd. Shine your PipBoy light here for a second. Looks like…a figure and something behind him. The image is odd…it’s like all the frames of something piled one on top of the other.
SIMON: Some kind of early movie camera?
ARCHIVIST: Maybe…I’ve just never seen anything this anachronistic before.
SIMON: Hey there’s a journal here.
ARCHIVIST: Come on, there’s a fireplace back in the archive. What say we make a comfy fire and setup CAMP here for the night so we can poke through all this at our leisure. I might be able to rig a projector for this thing and we can see what it is. We can have a chin wag and I can cook up some of my legendary molerat and beans.
SCENE 7: EXT. OVERSEER’S HOUSE. DAY.
SFX: HAMMERING NOISES.
VINCE: There. Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. (Chuckles) Yeah right.
SFX: DOOR OPENS IN DISTANCE. FOOTSTEPS ON DECKING.
OVERSEER: …about done unpacking. Shall we start dinner? Vince? Where are you? A barnstar? Really?
VINCE: Come on now…it’s a tradition and with what we’ve been through a little bit of luck would do us good.
OVERSEER: (Smirking) Luck huh? Remind me what your Luck rating is?
VINCE: Oh ha ha. You keep flashing that Lucky 7 you got in my face. Come here…
OVERSEER: (Laughing) No! Stop it, Vince! (Laughing) Cut it out! I’m supposed to be the serious one…
VINCE: Oh yes Overseer…oh yes Ma’am…right away Ma’am…
OVERSEER: Come on Mr. Security Chief…I’m starving…now get in there before I write you up.
VINCE: Wait! One last thing…
OVERSEER: What?
VINCE: Close your eyes…right this way…
OVERSEER: What is it?
VINCE: Just…trust me…mind the stairs now. Right…there…no peeking now!
SFX: ELECTRICAL SPARK.
VINCE: Okay, have a look!
OVERSEER: (Annoyed) Halloween decorations?
VINCE: And just about the flashiest Vault 76 jack-o-lantern you ever did see. Carved it myself.
OVERSEER: We’ve been through this already I just don’t like Halloween, okay.
VINCE: Why not? Remember what it was like back in the Vault? You didn’t seem to have a problem with it then. The trick or treating…the apple bobbing.
OVERSEER: That was different…it was for THEM…not me. Just because I can’t stand a holiday doesn’t mean I was going to deny it to those kids. Even then it was a damned nightmare. Remember the Ghoul Ball of 2097 when our buried dead rose from their graves because of that chemical spill? Or the Vampire Masquerade of 2089? Everyone went cannibal because of that tainted CRAM. Complete disasters that cost us lives.
VINCE: We got through it…it was two Halloweens out of decades of us all being together. So, what’s this really about?
OVERSEER: I don’t want to talk about it.
VINCE: You never do! Look if we’re going to make this work, you need to let me in. Your work is done…you raised them; you did what you could…let all that go.
OVERSEER: I can’t…I wish it were that simple. If we hadn’t lost level 13, everything that’s happened since Reclamation Day…it would’ve all been different…it would’ve been right. They would’ve had leaders out here. It would’ve made all the difference.
VINCE: (Sighs) Well we did and that’s just the way it goes. You want to make a difference? Stop hiding from them and bring them back together. It’s Halloween for Christ’s sake. Get on that HAM radio and tell them to swing by the house. I’m not taking these down…so deal with it. Tonight, we’re going to have a great dinner…I’ll cook…and then together, tomorrow, you and me are going to hand out candy to 20 year olds and possibly some little ghouls. Okay?
OVERSEER: (Sighs) Fine.
VINCE: Now! Soup time…perfect for a brisk autumn day…
SFX: METAL STAIRS.
VINCE: Well I’ll be damned! Chad Johnson…how are you kid?
CHAD: I need help.
OVERSEER: The world must be ending.
CHAD: I don’t have time for chit chat here, I’m against the clock.
VINCE: What’s the problem?
CHAD: It’s….my kid…
OVERSEER: Your what?
CHAD: Susie…she’s sick. Doc Martin can’t do fuck all for her…she’s turning feral. We’re going to try a blood dump from me into her, my blood is compatible…but we need…
OVERSEER: A Vault-Tec MedInfusion Unit. Did you try the AVR Medical Center?
CHAD: Yeah, I snagged that one already, but it got broken…he said the only other one he knew of…
VINCE: …is back in the Vault. Medical wing had one…should still be there. Place is sealed up tighter than a drum.
CHAD: I need to get in.
OVERSEER: You can’t. It’s sealed. Life support in there is long since shutdown…everything had a kill switch set to Reclamation Day.
CHAD: Yeah…real helpful. Don’t care. I need to get in there.
VINCE: There…isn’t one. It’s a one-way exit.
OVERSEER: That’s…not entirely true.
VINCE: What?
OVERSEER: The #3 outflow pipe runs parallel to the Hydroponics Lab, the wall there had a purposeful structural flaw…walls were left thin on purpose. One grenade would do it.
VINCE: What? Why didn’t you say anything? When everything went to hell we could’ve used armory access.
OVERSEER: There’s no life support in there Vince. I…I didn’t want to risk you.
CHAD: That’s perfect. I’m loaded up with enough explosives to do the job…
VINCE: Got some hazmat suits in the garage and some 02 tanks…should be able to cobble together some gear. That is if…
OVERSEER: It’s fine. Go. Help him.
VINCE: You sure? You be okay by yourself?
OVERSEER: Of course…I’ll….get on the horn and tell everyone to take a night off from recreational nuke drops, workshop murder bingo and running from hordes to put on a costume and head out for trick or treating tomorrow night. You two should be back by then.
CHAD: Thanks dude…appreciate this. I’ll owe you one.
VINCE: Don’t mention it kid, come on, garage is back here.
OVERSEER: Chad Johnson…a father…now I have seen everything.
SFX: THUNDER RUMBLES.
OVERSEER: Sky getting dark…looks like we’re in for quite a storm.
SCENE 8: ROADWAY. BERKELY SPRINGS. DAY.
SFX: CRUNCHING GRAVEL.
SLICK WILLY: Heathen demons, shades, ghouls and beasts from beyond. Ol’ Willy knew they’d be back! Why they got their teeth plum stuck right in Appalachia and all its miseries. Well Ol’ Willy remembered. He remembered them…they want the righteous cleansing lighting that chases back down below? Well they’re going to get it! They’ll get a kiss of old Tesla!
SFX: THUNDER IN DISTANCE. LEAVES STIR.
SLICK WILLY: Storm’s a comin….no…not a storm…there’s somethin’ foul in the air…like a carcass in the road, milky eyed and cooked in the sun…last year’s pumpkins long decayed…of festering graves and the dank swamps without a bottom…
SFX: WIND WHIPS UP. LEAVES BLOWING AROUND
SLICK WILLY: YOU WON’T GET OL’ WILLY YOU CRAZY WITCH!
SFX: ANGRY MOAN ON THE WIND. LEAVES SWIRL AROUND.
SLICK WILLY: Keep your wits Willy…ow! These leaves….they’re sharp….no! I’m…I’m bleeding…you keep your black magics away from me you old bitch!
SFX: TESLA DISCHARGES.
SFX: RUNNING. LEAVES SLICE AND CUT.
SLICK WILLY: Ouch! Damn it woman! Blood…need to find shelter…where’d the sun go?
SFX: EVIL LAUGHTER AND VOICES. WIND ACCELERATES.
SLICK WILLY: Train station! Watch Ol’ Willy salt the door! Hooooo Wheeee!
SFX: DOOR OPENS. SALT POURED. WIND FALLS AWAY. DOOR SLAMMED.
SLICK WILLY: (Panting) There! Let’s see you get passed that you Dusty Demon from Hell!
SFX: HEAVY LABORED BREATHING.
SLICK WILLY: Who’s there! You best git! Vamoose! Or taste a kiss of my lightnin’!
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: What on God’s green Earth are you? Ohhh! You’re one of those mole people! Well, look here…like I told all you’s fools before when Willy starts diggin’ he doesn’t care whose mountain it is!
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: Eh? What’s that? A lady mole is yah? Well pardon eh mois mon cherry. Allow me to introduce meself…Ignatius Willard is the name…and lovin’ the tenderness of a sweet woman is my game.
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: Come, come my bashful little ash rose…big sturdy woman like you…I’ll bet you get lots of snufflin’s from them there moles. You uh….lookin’ for a silly simp in yer life?
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: Strip? Well shucks yer keen! Ain’t yah? Spose I have a minute or two…I’ll peel you out of them clothes like peelin’ an onion…nice and natural (laughs)
MAMA: (Annoyed incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: Oh! Err…scrip? Not strip. Like them papers they used to use?
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: A trade you say? Well I don’t got no scrip m’dear!
SFX: DOOR OPENS. SHUFFLING NOISES.
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: Follow yah? No, no! Not out there! That devil woman’s out there!
SFX: OUTER DOOR OPENS. QUIET. EERIE WHISPERING.
SLICK WILLY: Looks quiet…where’d all this fog come from? It’s dark as hell out here…
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: What’s this thing? Some kind of casino machine thing?
MAMA: (Completely incoherent mumbling)
SLICK WILLY: I toss my junk in here and it spits out scrip? Hmm…
SFX: EERIE WHISPERING.
SLICK WILLY: I did make a bunch of these Teslas…let’s toss one in and see what cooks!
SFX: SCRIP MACHINE GRINDS DOWN.
SLICK WILLY: Well lookie here! 15 scrip just like that! Hoooooooo wheeeee!
SFX: EERIE WHISPERING.
SLICK WILLY: Back that bus up Miss Mama! Ol’ Willy feels lucky! Papa needs a new pair of boots!
SFX: SCRIP MACHINE GRINDS DOWN. WHISPERING AND CHANTING CONTINUES.
SLICK WILLY: 30 scrip! Just like that! Why I could buy some high falutin’ Tesla from yah! Forked like Thor’s Hammer…Ol’ Willy will show you a good time kitten! Willy The Thunder King! Bane of the East Wind! LET’S ROLLLL ANOTHER! (Laughing maniacally)
SFX: SCRIP MACHINE GRIND DOWN.
SFX: HEART BEAT FASTER AND FASTER.
SLICK WILLY: (Manic and raving) We’re cookin’ now! 5, 10, make way men! 15, 20 OLLLLLL WILLY’S GOT PLENTY!!!!
SFX: MACHINE GRINDS AND GRINDS.
SLICK WILLY: 25…30…do the Hurdy Gurdy! 35…40…no more….well blast it! I was on a roll! High roller suite a waitin’! Dinner and dancin’ with Hot Lips Mama! Then quiet nights…tender thighs…tell em’ lies…more…I don’t have enough…what else? What else can I roll?
SFX: CHANTING INCREASES.
SLICK WILLY: Hands….hands with stars….3 stars each….60 scrip? Pick up chips! 7, 8, lay em straight…make way Mama! Ol’ Willy feels this one’s going to break the bank!
SFX: GRINDING OF FLESH.
SLICK WILLY: (screaming) 9, 10….DO IT AGAIN …no….my roll….my roll… (screaming).
SFX: WIND WHISPERS AND THE LEAVES BLOW AWAY INTO THE DISTANCE.
SCENE 9: INT. MUSEUM. NIGHT.
SFX: CLANKING OF GEARS. SPARKS OF ELECTRICITY.
ARCHIVIST: (laughing as he tells the story) …so I’m running like I have the Devil on my tail completely covered in mud, turn a corner and crash face first into the backside of a super mutant. So, he gives a yell, I give a yell, and here comes Baldrick lit up like roman candle yelling, “Fire! Fire!”
BALDRICK: I was fully engulfed in fire. It was most alarming.
SIMON: (laughing)
ARCHIVIST: So, the Supermutant turns, and I turn with him behind his back like we’re in some low-class comedy and he was so distracted by Baldrick that I was able to beeline out the gate before he knew what hit him. (laughs)
SIMON: Oh man…remind me to tell you about my Deathclaw Island CAMP out.
ARCHIVIST: Things been tough for yah huh? (Spark flies) Ouch! That smarts.
SIMON: You can say that again. I tend to be a terrible judge of character and things just…don’t work out for me when it comes to faith in people as you put it.
ARCHIVIST: People tend to be complicated…like a good book can be. Say someone reads a book and then explains to you what it’s about. The interpreter distilling all of it down into an elevator pitch is an unreliable narrator delivering their interpretation based on their own perceptions, level of comprehension and even their prejudices or beliefs. Rare is the person who can look in the mirror and see the truth in the depths and complexities of the words. If you can see past the page, the construct of sentences, punctuation, and prose you find truth. There…that’s where the power is my boy. That…is MY religion.
SIMON: (Silence for a moment). Villains aren’t born.
ARCHIVIST: Hmmm? What was that?
SIMON: Something I said once. If you were evil, how would you know?
ARCHIVIST: (Silence) I suppose it depends on who is telling the story doesn’t it? Villains never think of themselves as such, even their darkest acts, terrible, horrible acts are done stemming from their truth and goals. Largely it’s our constructs that tells us if those acts are right or wrong.
SFX: SPARKS FLY.
ARCHIVIST: Ouch! Finger. There! I think that’ll do. One hobbled together projector. Pop open a port Baldrick…need to steal some power.
BALDRICK: Very good sir.
SFX: HATCH POPS OPEN. PLUG IS CONNECTED.
ARCHIVIST: This bit…right here…feel that? Expectation…electricity in the air and every nerve ending…it is the beauty of….discovery.
SFX: PROJECTOR ACTIVATES.
ARCHIVIST: Oh my…that’s…appears to be a train…
SFX: GLASS DROPS.
SIMON: No…no it can’t be…
ARCHIVIST: There’s a figure…a few of them but they’re piled together…let me adjust the lens here.
SFX: WIND WHIPS PAPERS.
ARCHIVIST: Looks like a man…ringmaster maybe. A circus train?
BALDRICK: Sir…? Something’s….wrong….too much power…
SFX: SHORT CIRCUITS. SPARKS FLY.
SIMON: His name is Mr. Dark.
SFX: PROJECTOR STARTS FLICKERING.
ARCHIVIST: What on Earth? Baldrick! Shut it off! It’s moving…how is it moving…it’s a single image…
For you may be the next to die…
SFX: GROUND RUMBLING. TRAIN WHISTLE IN DISTANCE.
ARCHIVIST: I….I can’t unplug this thing….Baldrick! Kid help me! Grab hold….
BALDRICK: (singing) They’ll wrap you up in a big white sheet
From your head down to your feet…your feet…your feet…
SIMON: I WAITED! I WAITED FOR YOU. I’M READY! I’M STILL READY!
SFX: RUMBLING INCREASES WINDOWS SMASH.
SFX: TRAIN RUMBLES CLOSER FROM A PLACE UNSEEN.
SIMON: Get out of the way!
SFX: TRAIN EXPLODES THROUGH THE SCREEN. EXPLOSION OF BOOKCASES AND DISPLAYS AS IT RUMBLES THROUGH AND SMASHES OUT OF THE WALL. PEAL OF THUNDER ROLLS ACROSS THE SKY. RECEDES IN THE DISTANCE. LONG MOURNFUL TRAIN WHISTLE.
ARCHIVIST: What in the HELL was that?
SIMON: The end and the beginning. Are you okay?
ARCHIVIST: Yeah…scuffs and scratches but…y…your shadow. You said earlier your shadow is gone…you’re not casting one.
SIMON: I’m sorry. I’m needed.
SFX: WET SMACK AGAINST HEAD AS THE RIFLE BUTT KNOCKS HIM OUT.
DUST WITCH: Image in time, collect what it is mine…
SFX: SLIDE REMOVED FROM PROJECTOR.
SIMON: (Singing) Don’t you ever laugh as the hearse goes by…
For we may be the next to die…
SFX: CRUNCHING GLASS AND FOOTSTEPS RECEEDE.
SCENE 10: EXT. CHARLESTON. DAY.
KORI: …Connor there’s nothing here? We’ve been all over this place. It’s a plain ordinary, boring old field with bits and bobs of junk. We’ve scoured this place with fine tooth comb there’s no trace of any kind of cave or hidden mirror maze.
JOHNS: I KNOW! But I’m telling you what I saw Kori. When have I ever been prone to daydreams or exaggeration?
KORI: Never…
JOHNS: RIGHT!!
KORI: But I’ll tell you something else Connor you’ve long since passed the point of hiding the bottles.
JOHNS: Don’t start Kori…
KORI: Don’t shut me down Connor…
WHITE: Umm…excuse me…I’m sure this domestic situation is important and all, but are we done here? We’re freezing. That New Charleston Herald Editor in Chief Holly Green showed up and wanted to know what was going on with the barricades up and all…not sure what to tell her
KORI: Ugh…the press. Yes, Recruit White…pack it up we’re headed back to HQ. I’ll handle Holly. You know what today is right? Halloween…we’re likely to start getting calls about the usual pranks, vandalism, griefing and CAMP nuking we usually deal every year.
JOHNS: KORI! I’m telling you whatever that was…it wasn’t natural. It was….what…the hell….
SFX: WIND AND THUNDER APPROACHING. A TRAIN WHISTLE.
KORI: Storm front? I don’t think I’ve ever seen fog roll in that fast before…
SFX: EERIE WHISPERING.
JOHNS: Oh…shit….RUN!
WHITE: What are you flippin’ out for Commander?
JOHNS: I’m telling you run!
KORI: Connor….what is….
SFX: BLAST OF HOT WIND AND LEAVES AS THE FOG ENVELOPES THEM.
JOHNS: Kori…stay close to me…
KORI: What is this? I can’t see any of the Officers…
SFX: TRAIN IS HEARD APPROACHING AND SQUEELING TO A STOP.
JOHNS: Take my hand…
SFX: GUN COCKED.
KORI: What is going on?
JOHNS: I don’t know…
SFX: TRAIN WHISTLE BEGINS, GROWING LOUDER. GROUND VIBRATES AND THE SOUND OF METAL RENDING, TEARING IS HEARD.
KORI: What is that? It’s so loud!
JOHNS: White! Hawkins! Higgins! Macklin! Black! Anybody….CAN YOU HEAR ME?
WHITE: Commander? Can’t see shit! What was that noise?
JOHNS: No idea…where are you?
WHITE: Over here?
KORI: Well stop moving around.
WHITE: I’m standing still….
KORI: But you voice is bouncing all around…
JOHNS: Come on…this way…
SFX: ELECTRICAL NEON LIGHT FLICKS ON.
KORI: Connor? A light…
JOHNS: White where are you?
WHITE: ….s…sir? I found Private Lauren…she…oh god she’s been torn apart.
JOHNS: What? Stay there! Damn it…what is with this fog…
KORI: Some buildings up ahead…G.M. Achlys Electric Drive-In Theatre?
JOHNS: That’s the fastest damned CAMP building I’ve ever seen…I don’t like this..
HOLLY: He….hello? What is going on here?
KORI: Holly? That you?
HOLLY: Kori? I’m….I don’t know where I am. This fog came out of nowhere. Can’t see a thing. Connor with you?
JOHNS: I’m here. Try and walk towards our voices.
HOLLY: Your voices are weird…it’s like your over there…and over here. Hang on…see someone moving. Is that you guys?
KORI: It sounds like you’re moving away…
HOLLY: Who is…?
ROBOT: Little Jimmy running out of fuel, too? Make a crash landing to your nearest Red Rocket Automated Diner today. Let’s see what your insides look like!
HOLLY: OH MY GOD! NO! NO!
SFX: SPLASH OF BLOOD. BODY THUD.
KORI: HOLLY? HOLLY? SHIT.
JOHNS: This way…come on Kori! We can’t do anything for her…we need to find the others. Some blood here…turn on your PipBoy light…
SFX: PIPBOY LIGHT FLICKS ON.
KORI: Oh my God…Connor…it’s…Marrick.
JOHNS: Something tore his arms off…
KORI: Cigarette’s still in his mouth…
JOHNS: He died as he lived…
HIGGINS: Hello? Lauren!? Hawkins? Where is everyone?
ROBOT: Stop by Red Rocket for a tank full of fun, and know that you're blasting off with the best. FILLER UP! DING DING!
JOHNS: Higgins! Run! Just run!
HIGGINS: No! What is that thing??
SFX: SHOTS FIRED. BLOOD SPLASHES AND GORE. HEAD ROLLS.
SFX: FAST MOVEMENT AROUND THEM. SCREAMS RING OUT EVERYWHERE.
KORI: Connor…we have to get out of here…we can’t fight this…
JOHNS: NO!
ROBOT: Shipping rates may apply... With Red Rocket your next family vacation will be OUT OF THIS WORLD AND SO WILL YOUR TORSO!
SFX: HE FIRES SHOTS INTO THE DARK.
JOHNS: WHERE ARE YOU!?
ROBOT: Refueling for a new age: Red Rocket Coolant Replacement is your family's key to ATOMIC POWER! Would you like me to replace your liver sir?
KORI: Scrap kit…we need to get the hell out of here.
JOHNS: What about the others…
KORI: Open your scrap kit…we need to go! NOW!
SFX: LATCHES FLIPPED. VORTEX OPENS.
SFX: ROBOT CLOPPING CLOSER.
KORI: In! Now! Ahhhhhh….
ROBOT: Fuel running on empty? Red Rocket is ready to serve!
SFX: ROBOT FIST WITHDRAWS FROM HER CHEST.
JOHNS: KORI! NOOOO!
SFX: VORTEX PULLS HIM IN. CLATTERS TO THE GROUND.
ROBOT: Stop by Red Rocket for a tank full of fun, and know that you're blasting off with the best.
SIMON: Hello? I’m here.
DARK: Sssssssimon. Ah, my boy there you are…my twin in shadow.
SIMON: Is the deal still good. I’ve been waiting.
DARK: Humph. Take my hand….we have much work to do.
DUST WITCH: The lecherous old fool, the lightning peddler is spellbound and drowned in his own greed and viscera.
DARK: Excellent…let’s place Mr. Ignatius Willard in a 3 wheeled wonder and pray, give him a bucket of popcorn on the house. Let’s play his film back so he can live through that again? I do love a good rerun…
DUST WITCH: It will be of the greatest pleasure…
SIMON: How soon can we leave? I hate it here.
DARK: Patience, my boy…we have a gala to plan, invitations to issue, a Halloween spectacle. And they will come willingly, oh yes. Those who do not will be collected. But tonight? DEVIL’S NIGHT!
SFX: WIND SWIRLS.
DARK: Ruined flesh far and beyond, crystalline shard boned and milky eyed husks forever burning! Hear me…come…come…in costume garb, rend flesh and bone, tear down wall, and seek…destroy! Let the true Scorched Plague be your clutching claws and footsteps bringing TERROR to every door on this day of All Hallow’s Eve! GATHER AND GO!!!
SIMON: What is this place?
DARK: The beginning and the end. ROLL THE PROJECTOR!
SFX: PROJECTOR STARTS.
SIMON: A drive-in?
DARK: With an exclusive, never been seen marvel of cinematic wonder! Bring the entire family to G.M. Achlys Electric Drive-In Theatre!
SIMON: The screen is so dark…
DARK: The Black. Every Appalachian foul deed, sad story, betrayal and delicious sin projected for viewing pleasure, a focal point of shadow…bleeding out into the world…temptations of the soul made flesh in 3 dimensions. Come! Hop aboard this lovely convertible because the show is about to begin.
SFX: DOORS OPEN.
SIMON: I’d never been to a drive-in, Mom and Dad met at one…I think they saw…yes Night of the Fish men’s Revenge.
DARK: Ah! A true classic. You know they just don’t creature features like they used to. The calendar has shed itself yet again, and my oh my have you been busy. I was sorry things didn’t work out with your friends.
SIMON: I thought…we had something special. To be held, to hold…just to be warm next to someone and know they have your back as well as your heart. It’s the happiest I’ve ever felt…and then…
DARK: They cast you out. I can sympathize with that believe me. As bestial as temptations of the flesh are, take my advice…pursue your own desires and hold fast to your own beliefs. It’s far less complicated. The only truth of anything in this world is power, but in a word, it is more than ego…no, no…the truth of power is that lifts you to such a place that nothing can touch you, much less hurt you.
SIMON: Truth. That’s what I’ve been after. The truth of the lie of Appalachia, why death has no hold here, how they corrupted what we are, everything that makes us human. It’s a perversion of nature and it can’t continue. I’ve been searching…everywhere for keys to unlock…something…I’ve just been at an impasse.
DARK: Pursuing truth no matter the cost?
SIMON: Yes, the truth matters before anything or anyone else.
DARK: Popcorn?
SIMON: Sure…
SFX: CRUNCHING.
DARK: Ah! Here we go…I love this one…Vault of the Damned. A real corker.
SIMON: That’s…impossible. It’s…
DARK: Chad…shhh…the show is about to begin.
SCENE 11: VAULT 76. DAY.
SFX: SLOSHING NOISE. RASPY BREATHING.
CHAD: This is fucking disgusting bro.
VINCE: Yeah, to be honest I didn’t anticipate spending Halloween slogging through sewage either. Hold up…let me check the map.
SFX: PIPBOY MAP MOVED.
VINCE: The tunnel wall closest to the Hydroponics Lab should be right up here.
SFX: SLOSHING CONTINUES.
CHAD: So…uhh…you and the Overseer huh? Never saw her as the settle down milk and cookies housewife type.
VINCE: (Laughs) Yeah…never did I, but her bark is worse than her bite. You have to remember that just because the job ends, the mask you wear doing it never quite goes away. But I suppose it’s none the less surprising than you with a kid?
CHAD: Yeah…didn’t plan it that way either. At first I thought it would just be funny to have someone around cuz she’s kind of a badass…and bein’ a kid she’s a great hook for a good con…so many plebs didn’t know what hit ‘em…
VINCE: Ummm…uh huh…
CHAD: But then…she kind of grew on me. Like something small that started growing and you didn’t realize it until one day you realize you can’t remember what it was like without them. It felt good to love someone proper and have it love you back.
VINCE: Yeah…kids are like that. I had two.
CHAD: What happened to them?
VINCE: Vault-Tec rejecting their applications and put them in another vault. Vault 94.
CHAD: Ah…shit I’m sorry.
VINCE: Yup. Here we are.
CHAD: How many grenades do you need?
VINCE: Two should do…any more and we risk a collapse. Ready?
SFX: PINS PULLED.
VINCE: FIRE IN THE HOLE!
SFX: SLOSHING BACK. EXPLOSION. METAL BLOWN OUT. GUST OF FIRE AND WIND.
CHAD: Hot damn…that worked.
VINCE: Ah yup…she was right. Let’s go.
SFX: SLOSHING. JUMPING DOWN UNTO TILE.
CHAD: Jeez…this place is a mess.
VINCE: Kill switch shut everything off. Looks like mold and fungus took over here. Good thing we have these suits. You don’t want to breathe this in. Medical Wing’s just down here.
CHAD: Yeah I remember. I’ve been meaning to ask you…how much did you know about what they did to us?
VINCE: Enough that I should’ve done something sooner to stop it. I’d heard rumors about Vault-Tec…everyone had in the last few days before this place was sealed up for good. Then over the years when she wasn’t paying attention or perhaps, she wanted me to know…she let slip words like Lazarus and templating. We…had to participate in a test fire of whatever keeps us ticking. That still haunts me…
CHAD: Gotta tell yah…whatever the hell those Vault-Tec bastards did…I’ve been seein’ some weird shit.
VINCE: Yeah…she explained it’s like copying a copying…over time the image breaks down.
CHAD: Still, the way things are out there…it’s handy in a jam.
SFX: EERIE WHISPERING.
VINCE: What was that?
CHAD: Dunno…
VINCE: What’s all over the floor?
CHAD: Looks like leaves? Didn’t think we had trees this deep down.
VINCE: We didn’t…let’s get that thing and get the hell out of here. It’s giving me the heebee jeebees. Ah! Here we are…Medical Wing…and…what the fuck?
CHAD: What is this? Thought there was no oxygen down here?
VINCE: There isn’t…
CHAD: How do you explain this spooky ass pumpkin patch?
VINCE: Hang on…going to take my helmet off just to see.
SFX: HELMET REMOVED. VACUUM SEAL RELEASE.
VINCE: Huh. Air’s fine. You can take yours off.
SFX: HELMET REMOVED. VACUUM SEAL RELEASE.
CHAD: Bit foggy down here…maybe some systems didn’t completely shut down?
VINCE: No…everything did. This isn’t supposed to be here. We never grew pumpkins down here…
CHAD: I saw we cut across lickety-split.
VINCE: The perimeter is probably safer…come on.
SFX: CRUNCHING LEAVES. WHISPERING.
SFX: VINES MOVE. SOMETHING LARGE SHIFTS. DEEP BELLOWING GROAN.
CHAD: Oh hell no dude…what was that?
VINCE: This doesn’t make sense…everything should be dead down here. Here we are. Medical supplies and equipment in here. Now let me see…
SFX: KEYS PUNCHED IN. DOOR SLIDES OPEN.
VINCE: Ha! Old brain cells still firing away. Glad I remembered the code.
CHAD: YES! There it is dude. (Emotional) There’s a chance…gotta get this back to her fast.
SFX: BAG UNZIPPED. EQUIPMENT STUFFED INSIDE.
SFX: DEEP GROAN. VINES SLITHER.
VINCE: Come on! Let’s move…
SFX: METAL GROANS, CATWALK COLLAPSES. BODIES THUD TO GROUND.
CHAD: Ah! Damn…
VINCE: Catwalk collapsed…we’re going to have to cut across…because of course. Stay frosty…eyes peeled.
CHAD: Never thought I’d see the day when fuckin’ pumpkins would have me dribblin’ out my johnson. Hold up.
SFX: BAG UNZIPPED.
VINCE: What are you doing? We need to move.
CHAD: The Chad is never without tactical nuclear devices.
VINCE: A Fat Man? Are you insane….you shoot that thing off here you’ll blow us to kingdom come…
CHAD: Hey…umm…lights going out…that’s…a little worrying bro.
VINCE: Come on! Run!
SFX: DEEP MOAN. VINES WHIP AROUND.
SFX: LIGHTS SHUT OFF IN SEQUENCE.
CHAD: Can’t see shit in here! Wait…a minute…that’s….names…faces….look at the pumpkins! They’re lighting up like jack o’lanterns.
VINCE: They’re Residents…Dwellers…something written on them…Adam Toller, Vince…killed me?
CHAD: Jessica Marsh…Chad robbed me…I drowned in a trap…what is this?
VINCE: No, no…Toller was patrolling level 13 that Halloween night…but that wasn’t me…wasn’t my fault!
SFX: TENTACLE VINE WHIPS.
VINCE: It’s got me! Get it off!
CHAD: Hold up! Can’t get hold…
VINCE: CHADDDDD! It’s got me!
SFX: DRAGGING NOISES. FLAME EXPLODES AS A GIANT JACK O’LANTERN APPEARS IN THE DARK. DEEP RESOUNDING BEAST GROWL.
CHAD: That…is one big ass pumpkin. Hang on dude!
SFX: RUNNING. BLADE DRAWN. SLASHES AND CUTS VINCE. BEAST CRIES OUT.
VINCE: Hurry! Cut them! Cut the vines!
SFX: TENTACLE WHIPS AND SEND CHAD FLYING. KNIFE CLATTERS SOMEWHERE. DRAGGING CONTINUES.
VINCE: GET OFF! AHH….
SFX: CHEWING SOUNDS. BURNING FLAMES AND FLESH.
VINCE: GET IT OFF ME! IT BURNS! CHADDD! SHOOT IT!
CHAD: IT’LL KILL YOU DUDE!
VINCE: JUST DO IT! THE LAB! GET OUT AND BLOW IT! NOW!!! AHHHHH!
SFX: CRUNCH OF BONE. SPURTS OF BLOOD.
SFX: RUNNING.
CHAD: Hey Jackoff Lantern! Trick! (Laughs) Made you look!
SFX: FAT MAN FIRES. MASSIVE EXPLOSION AND COLLAPSING DEBRIS. BEAST CRIES OUT.
CHAD: Dude I’m startin’ to hate Halloween.
SFX: JUMP INTO PIPE. SLOSHING SEWAGE RECEEDES.
SCENE 12: RED SLOE’S DINER. NIGHT.
DOC: Hold him still please.
AMATA: Is there any change?
DOC: Hmmm…not good. Not good at all. Doesn’t make sense. You’ve been flushing him with RadAway?
AMATA: Yeah every half hour…his rads just accumulating.
DOC: I’m at a loss here kid, I wonder…you have any Nuka Grape downstairs?
AMATA: Sure…why?
DOC: Well conventional medicine just ain’t working…here’s what I want you to do, prep a 3-part RadAway to 1 part Nuka Grape in his IV drip. Change it every 20 minutes…got that? 20 minutes…timing will be important. I think we can shock his system…start flushing these rads.
AMATA: Sure, I can do that…can I fix you some dinner? We have plenty of free beds.
DOC: It’s a kind offer, but tonight Doc is taking the night off. They can have their explosions, poison candy and chaos. I’m taking the whole clinic to that new drive-in.
SFX: WALKING ON STAIRS.
AMATA: New drive-in?
DOC: Yes indeed. Something or other Achlys Electric Drive-In. Flyer said they’re giving out free samples of Dark Elixir of Life. Supposed to be some wild cure all! And boy oh boy would I love to get a drop of that stuff. Maybe peel off a few years around my ears. (Laughs)
AMATA: Achlys…that’s a weird name…
DOC: Ayuh…anyway, every 20 minutes now. Good night!
AMATA: Night!
SFX: DOOR OPENS. CLOSES.
AMATA: (sighs)
SFX: WALKING ON STAIRS.
AMATA: Time to change the bedpan again…then the sheets…then this every 20 minutes. I’m…so tired. Why won’t you wake up Jake? WAKE UP?
SFX: SHEETS SLIDE OFF.
AMATA: I told you. I warned you. If you hadn’t pussy footed around with Simon, none of this would’ve happened. I never wanted THAT night to happen. We were happy Jake. Now look at us. You’re…a walking corpse and I’m a nurse all of a sudden as if I didn’t have enough to do around here.
SFX: DOOR CHIME RINGS.
GUNNER: Hello? You guys open?
AMATA: Yeah! Be down in a minute! (Sigh)
SFX: WALKING ON STAIRS.
AMATA: Grab a seat anywhere…and fair warning…10 gauge is by the counter and I have a laser pistol in my back pocket. If there’s one thing I’m not in the mood for it’s Hallowen bullshit.
GUNNER: Now, now! Hold on there…just here for a meal and a chin wag. Saw your light on wasn’t too sure you was open, but figured I’d chance it just the same.
AMATA: Fair enough. What can I get yah?
GUNNER: What’s good and hot?
AMATA: Got a Mirelurk Seafood dinner…legs and claws…
GUNNER: Comes with a bib?
AMATA: You know it.
GUNNER: That’ll do me just fine.
AMATA: Gimme about 15 okay?
SFX: DOOR SWINGS. POTS RATTLING.
GUNNER: It’s getting crazy out there. You seem them scorched hordes? Dressed up like trick or treaters…they’ve never done that before.
AMATA: Yeah…shot a few of them already.
GUNNER: You run this place all by yourself?
AMATA: ….uh…yeah for the most part. Hey you want the butter sauce? It makes them taste…well less like bog…
GUNNER: Sure darlin’ I’m easy peasy lemon squeezie.
SFX: DOOR SWINGS.
AMATA: There we go…shouldn’t be long. Haven’t see you around?
GUNNER: Nope, don’t suppose you would’ve and I certainly would’ve said hello to you if I had been. (Laughs) Name’s Gunner.
AMATA: Amata…is that a Raider name?
GUNNER: Nope! Merc…for now the roads are my lady. Hoofed it on down the Appalachian trail from up north and this here is just about the greenest patch of ground I’ve seen in all my travels. You folks were lucky.
AMATA: Jeez…you must be pretty good with a piece to survive out there on your own.
GUNNER: (Laughs) I know a thing or two. Had some wild scrapes….close calls…
AMATA: Oh yeah? Coffee?
GUNNER: Sure.
SFX: COFFEE POURS.
AMATA: Like what?
GUNNER: I was comin’ down the backside of Stony Mountain on a moonless night few months back just north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania when I got tranq’d by some raiders. Came to a charnal house…just…awful place…blood, guts and offal everywhere. They’d gone wild…savage…I’ll never forget their eyes…glowed yellow in the dark, cloaked with wolf pelts. I’d never been so scared.
AMATA: Jeez…how’d you get away?
GUNNER: Lucked out…always keep a few lockpicks in the hem of my pants. They never found them…was able to pick it and sneak out before they noticed. They’d turned straight to cannibalism. Dark business…
AMATA: Yeah…we’ve had some of that around here too.
GUNNER: You didn’t decorate for Halloween? Jack o’lanterns are a talisman…old one at that…there are some things I’ve learned to abide by…just in case, mind you.
AMATA: I just…didn’t get around to it. Been a struggle lately.
GUNNER: Eyes as deep as yours should’ve carry that much pain. Everything okay here?
AMATA: It’s…Jake…my…boyfriend…fiancé….whatever. There was an accident weeks ago now. He’s…he’s turning into a ghoul.
GUNNER: Sorry to hear that.
AMATA: Shit. Jake! Need to head upstairs. We’re trying something new.
GUNNER: Need a hand? Least I can do than sit down here in the dark.
AMATA: Sure that’d be great!
SFX: STAIRS WALKING.
AMATA: Right in here. Need to change his wound dressings and change his IV.
GUNNER: I can change his dressin’s simple enough…(breathes through his teeth) don’t look good…not at all. I’ve met some ghouls, most of them feral…but some plainspoken enough, just human enough. Terrible way to live.
SFX: SODA OPENED. MIXED.
AMATA: It all happened so fast.
GUNNER: Sometimes it does…this place is…strange though. I seen some fool in a vault outfit just jumpin’ through the air like some kind of Spring Heeled Jack before he was beaten and gobbled up by a flying dragon thing. Then…just as you please. He reappeared out of thin air carrying a chair with the stars and stripes. Bloody witchcraft if you ask me.
AMATA: We’re not sure what that is. None of us can die.
GUNNER: None of you?
AMATA: Nope…we came from Vault 76…they did something to us. Something with the blood and test program.
GUNNER: You just die….and come back?
AMATA: Yup. Every time.
GUNNER: Well look…I don’t know what this Doc Martin has suggested, but can’t Jake just…die and come back good as new?
AMATA: I…I don’t know.
GUNNER: I’ve seen my share of ghouls and he looks bad. Talked to a few of them. They said it’s like rotting from the inside and out…every nerve ending exposed to air…every movement of fabric like fire. It’s hell…hell for the living.
AMATA: Jake…
GUNNER: Look…I know this isn’t something natural…normal…and not something you do to family. But me? I’m no one…a shadow on the road.
AMATA: I can’t just…
GUNNER: Like slipping into a bath…you just step out, close the door. Quick, easy…and then we wait.
AMATA: No…that’s…
GUNNER: The alternative…is let him suffer. I seen that look…you’re taking care of you and all of him…your eyes…beautiful eyes…so tired. If it works like that…there’s no downside to this.
AMATA: I…I need to check on dinner.
GUNNER: Understood.
SFX: STAIRS. DOOR CLOSES.
AMATA: (Crying quietly) it’ll be okay. Just okay…only way.
SFX: THUMP. LAMP SMASHES.
AMATA: Gunner? Everything okay up there?
SFX: DOOR OPENS. FOOTSTEPS.
GUNNER: Right as rain.
AMATA: Blood…you’ve got blood on you…
GUNNER: So I do…mind if I use your shower?
AMATA: Uhh…no…go right ahead.
GUNNER: Just going to clean myself up…and after the long walk in the night…that hot water can do wonders on dog tired muscle.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS. BATHROOM DOOR CLOSES. SHOWER STARTS.
AMATA: It’ll be fine…get a grip Amat=a. Jake will respawn and everything will be back to normal.
SFX: THUMP IN BATHROOM.
GUNNER: Ohhhhh yeah….
AMATA: Everything okay in there?
GUNNER: Right as rain puddin’…this water is just the ticket…
AMATA: Guy is built like a bear…he had such dark eyes…come on get a grip Amata. Big arms…
SFX: FOOTSTEPS APPROACH BATHROOM.
AMATA: This is stupid…what are you doing? Looking in peepholes now? It’s only been a few weeks…think you could get your hormones in check. Maybe just one look…
SFX: THUMPING. GROWL.
AMATA: What is he doing in there…
SFX: WOLF GROWL
AMATA: What is that…a wolf pelt?
SFX: WATER TURNED OFF. WOLF HOWL.
AMATA: (Gasps) What the hell? What the hell IS HE?
SFX: RUNNING. DOOR SWISHES. POTS AND PANS CLATTER.
SFX: LIGHT TURN OUT.
AMATA: What happened to the lights? What is this? PipBoy light not working….
GUNNER: (Deep wolf voice) See anything you like?
AMATA: (Screams)
SFX: WOLF HOWL. CRASHING. SCREAMING. SLASHING AND GORE. SLOWLY FADES.
SCENE 13: RUSTY PICK. NIGHT.
SFX: ELECTRICAL POPS. BROKEN RECORD. DOOR OPENS.
CHAD: Moose! Pats! I’m back! Where the hell is everybody? This place is a wreck.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS. PAPERS.
CHAD: You are cordially invited to the opening of G.M. Ach…anchovies electric drive in? PUNCH! (pause) Blood all over this place. The kid…oh no…

ELLA: Hi! My name is Ella! Let’s learn the alphabet! F is for fanny! Tee hee!
CHAD: Enough of that crap! Who took her?
ELLA: The Dust Witch…the fancy man named Dark and Simon. Dark is strong…to strong for E-L-L-A! Ella!
CHAD: Simon? They took all of them? Where?
ELLA: The drive in silly! Halloween show double feature! The Black and the Devil Comes Down to Appalachia. Let’s go tickle their fannies with a switchblade. Wheee!
CHAD: Gotta save her!
ELLA: Take me. Let’s be friends!
CHAD: What? No…
ELLA: Maybe you didn’t hear me. Put me…in your bag…I have a score to settle. MURDER STAB STAB! TOUCHDOWNNNN!
CHAD: Look I’m not arguing with no demonic doll. Keep it down though…need to think. Need to get some back up.
ELLA: Weeeee ooooooo weeeee oooo stick em up!
CHAD: Yeahh….perfect.
SFX: RUNNING. DOOR OPENS AND SLAMS.
SCENE 14: OVERSEER’S HOUSE. NIGHT.
SFX: SLIDE PROJECTOR TICKS.
SFX: WINE GLASS POURED.
OVERSEER: Nothing like spending a holiday alone…it was always your favorite though, wasn’t it?
SFX: DOORBELL.
OVERSEER: (Sighs) I really hate doing this.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS. DOOR OPENS.
BECKY: Trick or treat smell my feet give me something good to eat!
BRIAN: Well-paced delivery Becky Watts! Happy Samhain and Hallowe’en Overseer!
MARYANNE: Well gee whiz ma’am this place looks super spoopy! Why I was walking up the stairs and…well why don’t you tell her Brian…
BRIAN: No, you…
MARYANNE: Aww…no you should tell her…
BECKY: Can I just get my candy please?
OVERSEER: Sure kid…here you go.
BECKY: That’s it? 1 piece?
OVERSEER: Uhh…here…have some more. Likely won’t get many trick or treaters anyway.
BRIAN: Well what MaryAnne was GOING to say is that your home was positively frightening. Why coming up the stairs there I saw that spooky scarecrow and may have just made brownies.
OVERSEER: Sure…whatever.
MARYANNE: Say…you wouldn’t have any Soul Cakes in there would you?
OVERSEER: No…just some empty wine bottles. Look I need to…
MARYANNE: Well shucks you should! In ancient times when the Druidic priests celebrated the traditional holiday of Samhain, a festival of the dying sun god, it was eclipsed by Christianity. Samhain became All Souls' Eve and All Souls' Day. Sadly, the practice of gathering round a bonfire and committing ritual sacrifice and possible blood orgies fell out of favor.
BRIAN: Blood orgies! Oh my virgin ears.
OVERSEER: That’s great…have a good…
MARYANNE: Instead, night visitors of the Dark Ages began to venture abroad, going house to house. If they were lucky, they would be met at the doorstep with a plate of sweet and steaming soul cakes. The cakes, often simply referred to as souls, are given out to soulers (mainly consisting of children and the poor) who went from door to door during the days of Allhallowtide, a precursor to what we know as Hallowe’en singing and saying prayers "for the souls of the givers and their friends". Isn’t that swell?
OVERSEER: Fascinating. Now I really must be going.
BECKY: Can we go to the drive-in now?
BRIAN: Sure, but…
MARYANNE: We’re going to need to swing by Watoga little lady to trade in that candy for some dental care and accessories.
BECKY: You’re kidding me! What the f…
SFX: DOOR SLAMMED.
OVERSEER: (Sigh) Next year I’m spending Halloween in a quiet Silo. Might as well make some dinner.
SFX: POT ON STOVE. FIRE TICKS ON. BOXES OPENED.
OVERSEER (vo): It was his favorite holiday. You can’t tell Vince, can you? After all this time…you are still as secretive as a sealed Vault. You’re pathetic.
OVERSEER: So quiet in here…where is Vince? Maybe some music.
SFX: RADIO SWITCHED ON.
BISHOP: …reports of strange goings on coming in from everywhere tend to be some high class pranksterism folks. It is indeed Halloween, so if a spook or spectre shadows your shack…best pass the candy bowl and remember…there’s no such as ghosts. Now for a little seasonal number while I go off to find where on earth my growlin’ cohort the Night Wolf disappeared off to. It’s a little ditty first published in 1946 as Les Fuilles mortes, or “The Dead Leaves”. You know it best as Dean Domino’s hit, “Autumn Leaves.”
SFX: RADIO SWITCHED OFF.
OVERSEER: No, no….no.
OVERSEER (vo): That was his song. You know every word. Say his name…
OVERSEER: No.
OVERSEER (vo): Evan.
SFX: WIND BUFFETS AND RATTLES WINDOWS. EERIE WHISPER.
OVERSEER: Where IS Vince? He should’ve been back by now…something must be wrong.
SFX: ELECTRICAL SHORT. SLIDE PROJECTOR SHUTS OFF.
OVERSEER: Damn.
SFX: SWITCHES FLICKED.
OVERSEER: What’s wrong with this projector?
SFX: VIOLENT SPARK AS IT COMES ON.
OVERSEER: That’s not…where did these pictures come from?
OVERSEER (vo): You couldn’t even do it yourself. Look…see what they did. You asked them…and they did it because of their loyalty to you. You asked them to do what you couldn’t…you walked away from a promise because you WANTED Vault 76…what did it get you?
SFX: RADIO SWITCHES ON. EERIE WHISPER.
OVERSEER (vo): Overseer's... Overseer's personal journal...I found him. Evan. He's down there…
OVERSEER: What is going on here?
SFX: RADIO SWITCH FLICKS. STATIC DISTORTION AS HER OWN VOICE BECOMES TWISTED.
OVERSEER (vo): …just like I thought he'd be. But I... I didn't think he'd be... one of those things. The green lesions on his face... Oh god... I did this to him. It's all my fault…..my fault…..my fault….my fault….
OVERSEER: (Scream) Stop it! Stop!
OVERSEER (vo): …..my fault…..my fault….my fault….sacrificed him (gunshot) sacrificed him (gunshot)
SFX: RUNNING. KITCHEN DRAWER OPENING. CUTLERY SCATTER.
OVERSEER: (Scream) STOP! STOP STOP!
SFX: MEAT MALLET SMASHES RADIO TO PIECES.
SFX: WIND WHIPS AROUND HOUSE.
OVERSEER (vo): Remember the night you met? The Pumpkin Festival…you thought he was so beautiful…and you danced…you danced to his song. Your song…our song.
SFX: WALKING FAST. CURTAINS MOVED.
OVERSEER: Where is Vince?? Oh where is he?? I wish he’d come home. Nice and warm…its too quiet here. Too quiet.
SFX: POWER SHUTS OFF.
OVERSEER: Oh God…the power….the generator…
SFX: FOOTSTEPS ON STAIRS.
OVERSEER: Need the lights…some noise…any noise…
SFX: PIPBOY FLASHLIGHT ON.
OVERSEER: Check the generator. It’s fusion…the core had plenty left in it.
SFX: DOOR OPENS. WIND BLASTS IN. LEAVES SCATTER.
OVERSEER (vo): The ring. T-he promise…and you still lie to yourself don’t you? That it was all worth it?
SFX: SWITCHES THROWN.
OVERSEER: Come on….power…need some power…
OVERSEER (vo): You cheated on him…broke your vow….you cheated on him with Vault-Tec. Blind faith in what you knew, you suspected, was a lie.
SFX: CORE LOADED. POWER RESTARTS.
OVERSEER: Yes! Yes…
SFX: EERIE LAUGHTER. FAST RUNNING.
OVERSEER: Hello? Who is that?
SFX: RUNNING AND THE LEAVES RUSTLE.
SFX: AUTUMN LEAVES PLAYS DISTORTED IN THE WIND.
OVERSEER: No….no…
SFX: DOOR SLAMMED. FOOTSTEPS ON STAIRS.
SFX: HAM RADIO SWITCHED ON.
OVERSEER: (Frightened) H…hello? This is the Overseer…I’m…in trouble. If anyone is nearby please respond. I…I’ve got snacks…it’s nice and warm here. We can all be together like in the Vault. Remember how Halloween used to be? All together…nice and warm…it was not quiet. Never quiet…
SFX: STATIC. AUTUMN LEAVES PLAYS IN RESPONSE.
OVERSEER: NO! FUCK! STOP IT!
SFX: SMASHES RADIO. THROWS IT.
SFX: KNOCKS ON DOOR.
OVEERSEER: H…hello?
SFX: KNOCK. DEEPER. MORE OMINOUS.
OVERSEER: Vince?
SFX: DOOR OPENED. LEAVES BLOW IN. EERIE QUIET AND WHISPERING.
OVERSEER: No one. HELLO?! That’s not funny! You left your bag! Your…trick or treat bag…
OVERSEER (vo): Look at it.
OVERSEER: Who’s is this? It’s…old….
OVERSEER (vo): Older than old…
SFX: AUTUMN LEAVES SOFTLY.
OVERSEER: How is….it’s coming from in there…how is it?
SFX: BAG OPENED.
OVERSEER: What the hell? What the HELL?
OVERSEER (vo): It has no bottom…it can’t be this deep…but it is…listen…
SFX: AUTUMN LEAVES SOFTLY. DISTANT A SCRATCHING NOISE.
OVERSEER: This is impossible…it’s impossible…how deep does this go?
OVERSEER (vo): Garden stone. Give it a toss down like you used to like doing at the Wishing Well. Make a wish! Tell the truth and shame the Devil.
SFX: ROCK DROPPED, CLATTERING AGAINST ANCIENT STONE…FADING…FADING.
OVERSEER (vo): No bottom. Just dark…the hungry, hungry dark.
SFX: SCRATCHING, SCRABBLING…GETTING CLOSER.
OVERSEER: Jesus…what is that??
SFX: RUNNING. DOOR SLAMMED.
SFX: RECORD PLAYER STARTS. PLAYS AUTUMN LEAVES.
OVERSEER: VINCE! VINCE! WHERE ARE YOU?
SFX: KNOCKING ON DOOR. POUNDING. WIND INCREASES!
OVERSEER: WHERE IS EVERYBODY! SOMEONE HELP ME! HELP! STOP! STOP IT! (screaming)
SFX: WINDOWS EXPLODE. DOOR SMASHES TO GROUND.
OVERSEER (vo): Your sin…why you don’t like Halloween…it’s because you remember what you did…
OVERSEER: No! Evan I’m sorry!
OVERSEER (vo): The bag…long limbs and a face with too many eyes… it’s reaching up…almost here…oh you did something awful…
OVERSEER: I gave him what they were injecting everyone with at the Vault! I didn’t know what it was! I didn’t!
OVERSEER (vo): It did to him what it did to them all. He can’t die. He can’t ever die…so you send them…all of them…every day to shoot…
OVERSEER: (Crying) EVAN!
OVERSEER (vo): To hack…to blow up….to maim…to rend arms from torso…splatter the walls with his brains…as Autumn Leavessssss beginnnnnn to falllll.
OVERSEER: NO! I’M SORRY EVAN! I DIDN’T KNOW! I DIDN’T.
SFX: MONSTER GROWL AS SOMETHING CLAWS AT THE DOORWAY, PULLING ITSELF AND BAG IN.
OVERSEER: SOMEONE PLEASE GOD HELP ME! EVAN! EVAN! NO! PLEASE! I DIDN’T KNOW!
SFX: NAILS DRAGGING ON FLOOR.
OVERSEER (vo): Its hungry….always hungry….treat…such a delicious treat…it loves treats….
OVERSEER: JESUS CHRIST HELP ME!
SFX: DEEP GROWL AS THE HOUSE SHIFTS AND SPLINTERES.
OVERSEER: NOOOOOooooooo! PLEASE! SOMEONE!
SFX: VOICE GROWING FAINTER AS SHE’S DRAGGED INSIDE THE BAG. AUTUMN LEAVES PLAYS ON. LEAVES MOVE GENTLY NOW OUTSIDE. WIND DIES DOWN. THEN A BLOOD CURDELING SCREAM FROM DEEP BELOW AND SO FAR AWAY. AUTUMN LEAVES PLAYS ON.
SCENE 15: INT. 5-0 HQ
SFX: KNOCK ON DOOR.
ARCHIVIST: Hello?
JOHNS: (Mumbles drunkenly)
SFX: DOOR OPENS. BOTTLES SLIDE ACROSS FLOOR.
ARCHIVIST: Oh my…someone’s a proper Junkie’s min max build…
JOHNS: (Mumbles) what you want?
ARCHIVIST: Well…help. But frankly you look as able as a 3-legged chair.
JOHNS: Find it through someone else friend. I’m out of a job…our force was slaughtered and my…Kori…GET OUT!
SFX: BOTTLE THROWN. SMASHED.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS RECEEDE.
SFX: BOTTLE UNCORKED.
JOHNS: Find someone else.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS APPROACH. SPLASH OF WATER.
JOHNS: AHHHHH! WHAT THE HELL?!
ARCHIVIST: Look I’m sure whatever you’re drinking to seems important, but if you haven’t noticed Appalachia is descending into the 10th level of Hell.
JOHNS: I. HAVE. NO. OFFICERS. They’re all DEAD! I may as well be fired.
ARCHIVIST: Which in a crisis is about as good as the paper it is written on.
JOHNS: Fine okay, what the hell. One last make-believe that I’m relevant. What seems to be the trouble Mister…?
ARCHIVIST: Oh! Dolos. Archivist…librarian…and...well never mind all that. You know a Simon Rex?
JOHNS: Know him? Look over your shoulder and you’ll see he’s still Wanted, but we’ve been busy.
ARCHIVIST: Ah. Well…how can I put this? We found a…well I’m not sure what is…and somehow a train, an actual steam train came barreling through the wall and Baldrick is out of service, but I think with some spare parts from RobCo I can…
JOHNS: HEY! You want to slow things down a bit…start from the beginning.
ARCHIVIST: Have you been to the Archive of the Afterlife?
JOHNS: (Sigh) What did Simon do this time.
SCENE 16: EXT. DRIVE-IN. NIGHT.
DUST WITCH: Stories untold…the threefold death for all in the Black! (Laughs)
DARK: Ah! Such a wonderful turning out for our gala! And such prestigious guests! Look there…the Overseer and Evan together again in that car there. It’s so nice to see lovers finding one another again…such a lovely frozen scream on her face.
SIMON: There is a storm coming. The lightning and rain…do we have time?
DARK: Plenty of time my boy! It is…vexing…and forever chasing our tail, HIS cruel joke, the storm to wash away dust and shadow. But in there…through there in the Black an entire world created in blacks and whites where we control all…with these souls, these beautiful sinners we will eat well…
SIMON: Chad isn’t here. I want him to burn…I want to see him burn. Should I go get him?
DARK: I think not. There are just 3 left…the Bookkeeper, the Lawman and him and if I’m not mistaken, they’ll come soon enough. Their tale is…predictable. See…look now…they conspire…and in the distance sprinting athletically before a horde of Halloween scorched comes your polar opposite….The Chad….
SCENE 17: INT. 5-0 HQ
ARCHIVIST: …the journal was quite specific. Here, “…I always thought what he was telling me all those Halloween’s ago were stories, just stories as we autumns came and went. I know better…the Autumn People, the shades of humanity left to fester beneath every pile of leaves left to rot in homes where one morning no one woke, in every pumpkin long since passed with sag facing features of a life spent. They are called from the dark places by deepest despair, and secrets buried hidden under the layered years of regret. You can’t kill the Devil more than you can kill a shadow. He’s trapped an after image of them here, of what they are and what they were. I tried to destroy it but nothing, nothing would work. I went to a gypsy, a mistress of the old world and she guided me. It sleeps it in the barn under lock and key in a ring of salt sealed with bell, book and candle. I’m old now…as old as he was that last Halloween. I’ve left instructions…God help you if you don’t heed them.
JOHNS: Look this is all well and good but what exactly are we supposed to do about it?
SFX: GUNSHOTS. OUTER DOOR SLAMS OPEN.
CHAD: Eat lead you trick or treat bastards! Hey! Anyone alive in here or not possessed by some witch lady from Hell?
JOHNS: Chad??
CHAD: Well, hell! It’s Commander Johns. What’s good?
JOHNS: Fired. Drunk. You?
CHAD: I’d like to soak my thighs in a hot tub for about a week. Been booking it since the Rusty Pick with about 100 festive mummies, David Pumpkins and the kind of sexy vampire that only looks good at 2am after a bender and the lights aren’t on yet. Who’s this dude?
ARCHVIST: Ah…Dolos! Archivist…librarian…you know what just call me Dolos.
ELLA: Hi! I’m Ella! Let’s go out guns blazing! Wheeeee!
SFX: MOANING. POUNDING.
CHAD: Ah crap.
SFX: GUNSHOTS.
CHAD: Look, I need help. Some weird dude who talks too much took the kid…Punch, Moose…even Pats…and I think he’ll end up returning her.
JOHNS: You’re not the only one. He’s collected most everyone. Radio station went dead…can’t get anyone on comms. We could be the last hold outs.
ARCHIVIST: That horde will be here in any minute and I’m just about out of ammo. You got an armory in this place?
JOHNS: Do we? Right this way.
ARCHIVIST: Look I hardly think that guns are going to solve the larger issue here.
CHAD: Fair enough bro, but unless you got any candy to hand those tools, they’ll be monster mashing your face in right quick.
SFX: CELL DOOR SLIDES. LIGHT SWITCHES ON.
CHAD: Bro. I….think I’m in love.
JOHNS: Grab what you can, you too Dolos…we’re going to need about as much as we can carry.
ARCHIVIST: Well, I’ll carry, but don’t expect me to fire any of these…what is this?
JOHNS: Oh no. Leave that…it’s some kind of gun that shoots balls of paint. But it’s cursed…we found an empty camp and some missing Dwellers but paint splashes everywhere. They haven’t been seen since.
ARCHIVIST: Fair enough.
CHAD: What…is…that?
JOHNS: Confiscated it from the Vultures. It’s a flame thrower, but it’s been modified somehow…shoots explosive balls of flame.
CHAD: And you want to come home with me don’t you baby? This one’s mine! Hey, you have an idea on what the hell is going on out there? I’ve never seen scorched horde together like this…you watch them, and they move fluidly together like birds or fish. Something’s pulling the strings.
JOHNS: Long story short the drive-in isn’t what it appears. A demon or the Devil was set loose from a chronophotographic gun thanks to this guy and Simon and he plans on taking the souls of everyone in Appalachia and adding them to his freak show for all eternity.
CHAD: Ah. Okay. Right. I guess. Why is it always Simon?
SFX: WINDOWS SMASHING. MOANING AND GROANING.
SFX: GRENADE THROWN.
CHAD: Happy Halloween dude!
SFX: EXPLOSION.
ELLA: That was amaze balls! Let’s do it again! Can you spell immolation? I…M….
JOHNS: Come on…up to the roof. We’re too vulnerable on foot. We’ll take the Vertibot. Bit of a tight squeeze in there.
CHAD: Oh, hell yeah dude! Can I drive?
SFX: WALL EXPLODES. SCORCHED BITES JOHNS.
ARCHIVIST: Kill it with fire!
JOHNS: Ah! Bastard’s got my arm! Shoot it!
CHAD: Nice costume!
SFX: GUNSHOT. HEAD EXPLODES.
JOHNS: Damn that hurts…
CHAD: Lemme see…here…
SFX: FABRIC TEAR.
SFX: METAL STAIRS. ROOF DOOR OPENS.
JOHNS: Damn…this is no good…I can’t fly that one handed…
ARCHIVIST: Dolos to the rescue. I can fly it. Come along…
SFX: GROANING, YELLING COMING UP STAIRS.
CHAD: Start it up! I’ll hold them back.
SFX: EXPLOSIVE ROUNDS HURLED.
JOHNS: There…we had to move the controls around…and..
ARCHIVIST: Yes, yes. All good. Buckle up….
SFX: SWITCHES THROWN. ROTORS START. JETS FLARE TO LIFE.
CHAD: This thing is legendary! (Laughs) Whoa there Dracula! Where you goin’!?
SFX: EXPLOSIONS.
SFX: ROTORS REACH LIFTING SPEED.
ARCHIVIST: That’s it! Everyone aboard who’se going!
CHAD: Hey! Thanks for t===he work out dudes and dudettes!
SFX: DOOR SLIDES SHUT.
CHAD: In. Let’s go! Dude!
JOHNS: With this fog we’re going to have to fly low. Wait, where are you going? Drive-ins that way.
ARCHIVIST: We’re making a pit stop for some supplies you can’t find anywhere else. Not to worry. Here…have some Halloween candy. Stuff was pouring out of their insides back there…
SCENE 18: EXT. CHARLESTON. NIGHT.
SFX: VERTIBOT FLIGHT SOUNDS.
ARCHIVIST: ETA 3 minutes…how’s the arm?
JOHNS: Need a Stimpak like nobody’s business. Chad? You’ve been quiet.
CHAD: Finally sat my ass still enough to have a think. I hope the kid’s okay. She…she’s been sick. Been trying to chase down what Doc said I need to save her, but it’s not been easy.
JOHNS: Trust Doc Martin…he always comes through. He’d rather set your expectations low than too high. It’s just his way.
SFX: ENGINES DIP. CABIN SHAKES.
ARCHIVIST: Whoa there…what the hell?
SFX: MOANING SCREAM.
DUST WITCH: YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ARE THE LASSSSTTTT!
ELLA: There’s the bitch! Let me out of this bag! Let me at her!
CHAD: Ah! Jesus! There’s a crazy witch bitch on the wing!
DUST WITCH: (Angry wailing as she tears at the engine)
JOHNS: Open the door! Get her off! We’ll crash!
ARCHIVIST: I can’t keep this steady for much longer…
SFX: DOOR SLIDES OPEN.
DUST WITCH: YOU AGAIN! EYES LOOKING BRIGHT INTO THE NIGHT, A CURSE UPON…
SFX: FLAME THROWER HURLS FIRE.
CHAD: Keep your poetry for beat night you weirdo!
DUST WITCH: AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
ELLA: Youuuuuuuu.
DUST WITCH: The fallen angel, the shell bound sin…you’re no threat to me.
ELLA: Coniuro Veteres. Venite tonitrua et fulgura et venti et pluviae.
DUST WITCH: Shadows dark I beseech thee, the demon so small…still its…
ELLA: Percute et magam scinde. Urere et ligare. umbra percutite!
SFX: MASSIVE LIGHTNING STRIKE IS CALLED DOWN. ELECTRICITY WHIPS AROUND THE DUST WITCH.
DUST WITCH: Noooooooo nooooooooooooo!
SFX: SHE EXPLODES INTO DUST
SFX: EXPLOSION FROM ENGINE.
ARCHIVIST: It’s no good…we’re going down!
SFX: CABIN ROCKS. CHAD SLIDES OUT DOOR.
CHAD: Ahhh! Damn! Could use a hand here!
JOHNS: Reach! Come on!
SFX: EXPLOSION. CABIN SHAKES.
CHAD: AHhhhhhhhhh (into mist)
SFX: KLAXONS SOUNDING. ENGINES WHINE.
ARCHIVIST: Jump! Jump! It’s our only chance!
SFX: DOOR OPENS AS ARCHIVIST LEAPS OUT.
JOHNS: Wait! Wait damn it! I can’t reach the…
SFX: CRASH. SMASHING OF TREES. THEN SILENCE. EERIE WHISPERING AND CRICKETS AS FLAMES BURN FROM DEBRIS.
=SCENE 18: CRICKETS CHIRPING.
CHAD: Ah….damn dude…. (coughing) where the hell am I?
ELLA: I am….so tired. Can you spell tired?
CHAD: That was some bad assery.
ELLA: Can we go home now? Wheeee!
CHAD: Not yet…gotta find the kid. Where are we? There’s something up ahead in the fog here.
SFX: WALKING IN GRASS. FIRES BURN.
CHAD: Looks like a boxcar.
SFX: CLAMBER ON STAIRS. DOORS SLIDE OPEN.
CHAD: Some ol’ circus crap in here. Newspapers…I…I feel like I’ve been here before.
ELLA: That’s cuz you were silly! He made you forget. Tee hee.
CHAD: Autumn carnival comes to town…8 still missing. Cooger and Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show opens…the search goes on for missing children. These newspapers are old…go back hundreds of years.
ELLA: Old and older, tick tock goes the clock. The cow goes moooooo. The dark goes ahhhhhhh!
CHAD: We better find the others.
SFX: STEPS ON METAL. MOVING THROUGH GRASS. GROWL.
CHAD: What’s that? Looks like a circus cage.
ELLA: She’s close…left, right, up and down, don’t you frown!
CHAD: Oh my god….Susie?
SUSIE: RARRRRRRRRR! KILLLLL!!!!! RARRRRR! (Growling continues)
SFX: SMASHING ON CAGING. VIOLENT SHAKING.
CHAD: What the hell did he do to you? Hold up…I…I’ll get you out kid!
SFX: LOCKPICK NOISE.
CHAD: There! Now come on out of…
SFX: METAL CLOMPING.
CHAD: (Gasping) What the….(coughing) let go of me!
ROBOT: Is your car taking ages to get going? Well, we'll help your car start like new with Red Rockets Premium Hi-Octane coolant. You’re running empty!
SFX: PUNCHING METAL.
ELLA: Naughty man made of tin! Let him down and try again! Hominis metallica ardens splendens. Dimitte nostrum Pater hanc noctem Halloween.
SFX: THUNDER RUMBLES. SPARKS FLY. BODY FALLS TO GROUND.
CHAD: (Coughing) Let’s see how you do with some lead!
SFX: MINIGUN FIRES. METAL RICHOTES.
ROBOT: Red Rocket Corp is not responsible for any injuries as the result of hi-octane coolant, restrictions may apply, drive responsibly!
SFX: IRON FIST. PUNCH. ELECTRONIC CRUNCH.
ELLA: (Screams)
CHAD: Ella!
ELLA: …d…..d……d…..save…..save…..Su…..Su….save…ie….ie….ie…eeee i…eeee i….ohhhhh
SFX: ARM GRABS CHAD BY THROAT.
CHAD: (Coughing) Let go you metal bastard!
ROBOT: Stop by Red Rocket for a tank full of fun, and know that you're blasting off with the best.
CHAD: Whatever….(coughing) bro….have a cold Nuka on me….
SFX: NUKA GRENADE EXPLODES. DEBRIS EVERYWHERE.
CHAD: S…..Susie….
SFX: BODY COLLAPSES TO GROUND.
SCENE 19: EXT. DRIVE-IN
SFX: DRIVE-IN COMMERCIALS PLAY ON THE SCREEN, DISTORTED OVER THE SOUNDS OF MOANING AND TORMENT.
CHAD: (Moaning, waking up) Uhh…that son of a bitch.
SFX: STRUGGLE, GOOEY STRETCHY NOISES AS STRUGGLES TO FREE HIMSELF FROM HIS COCOON.
CHAD: What is this….spiders dude…not spiders…fucking hate spiders.
SFX: SKITTERING NOISE
SIMON: We are still seeking the other one, Dolos. The bookkeeper…the seeker of keys and secrets.
DARK: He’s weak willed and without weapon or companion let’s let our little trick or treaters make one final call before our departure.
SFX: EERIE WHISPERING AS DARK TELEPATHICALLY COMMANDS THEM.
DARK: (Concentrating) …seek…find…the little man…shred and devour, devour and shred. There. Now! Ah! Mr. Johnson! You’re awake! Splendid. I hope you appreciate the…how do you say…wheels I procured for you on the final leg of your journey this Halloween. The 2077 Chryslus Cherry Bomb, 1000 horsepower Atomic V8 engine propelling you from 0 to 60 in 0.3 seconds with a maximum sound barrier splintering speed of 263 miles per hour. Isn’t it the perfect chrome and steel personification of you, flashy, pompous, perhaps a little phallic and a perfect metaphor for the glittering, swaggering excess of American exceptionalism that condemned the world to fire and madness.
CHAD: Yeah smatterlings, metawhores…I was never much for book learning dude. But if you free up an arm from this gross cobweb fest we can see how far I can punch your ass. And hey Simon! How’s things? Fuck you too buddy!
DARK: Arrogant in the face of finality. Enjoy your car Chad, it is my final gift to you…for die Toten reiten schnell…the dead travel fast. Now, where were we… as yes, Commander Connor Johns, valiant defender of law and order in a world without either…impotently pushing back the tide of chaos with a paper dam. Simon my boy, if you would kindly bring Mr. Johns his treat from the concession stand
SFX: SCUFFLING. WALKING.
SIMON: With great pleasure. Down…no? Let me help you.
SFX: PUNCH. COLLAPSE TO GROUND.
KORI: (Screams) Ah…you son of a bitch. (Spits in his face) Connor?
JOHNS: Kori? I…I saw you die…
DARK: Ah the ruined lovers, my favorite tableau. Ladies and gentleman, before your eyes with shadows projected on the screen in glorious panoramic terrorvision we present the tale of the vice fueled lawman and the blind woman. Our leading man with fingers slightly trembling most days that he hides in dirty pockets lest the blind woman see for a change how much his life’s blood has been replaced with whiskey. Somewhere in the dark beneath lint, a tarnished lucky nickel and decades of grime on pants stolen off a corpse, sits two objects glinting in the dark. See them…ohhhh looook at them.
JOHNS: Stop this…don’t…
CHAD: Hey! Can I get some popcorn or something? Jesus Christ this extra position….extrap a mination or whatever the hell it’s called is killing me…
DARK: (Restrained fury at being interrupted) No talking during the picture please….SIR.
SFX: INSECTOID SCREECH AND SKITTERING.
CHAD: Ah! Get off me you hair little bastard! Not spiders! Not spiders! (Mumbled yelling as his mouth is bound in webbing.
DARK: The object on the left, tarnished gold and nickel now pockmarked from being tossed around for 365 wasted days of leg pumping, violent falling and dramatic diving post-apocalyptic survival Olympics. A symbol of a promise not yet uttered. The other? A single bullet. And she doesn’t know about the other does she Johns?
KORI: A bullet? Why are you carrying a bullet? Connor? ANSWER ME!
DARK: No 3-D glasses needed for this one Kori, look at that mask of shame. Tell her Johns or I will.
JOHNS: Let her go. You have me…take me and leave her out of this.
DARK: (Tsking noise with tongue) You paid your admission here. No refunds, but here’s a special Halloween goodie bag Kori. Once a week for months now, when the bottles run dry and the haze dims, Connor will remove his hand from his pocket, rubbing that ring…that talisman of hope he clings to and removes the bullet. And then, oh this is the best pa--- rt…the twist….
JOHNS: YOU SON OF A BITCH!
SFX: PUNCH.
DARK: SIMON!
JOHNS: GET OFF ME! I’LL KILL YOU!
KORI: Leave him alone damn it!
DARK: Look at that…blood…what a right hook! There’s the defiant lawman! Perfection! But it’s a mask isn’t it Connor? Like a paper mache Hallowe’en mask of yore, mildewed, rotting and collapsing in from the weight of itself. Look Kori on the screen…when you aren’t around, when the world is silent and at last he sees his true self, he puts the bullet into his gun looks in your bedroom mirror and pulls the trigger.
SFX: GUNSHOT.
KORI: (Screams) CONNOR??? What did you do?
DARK: But there’s no exit here is there Kori? A short while later, with a new bar stool in hand or perhaps a quaint table lamp, he opens his eyes, sits up and fetches the mop from the kitchen cupboard to clean up the mess before you get home. Do you know WHYYYYYY Kori? Tell her Connor.
CONNOR: I…I can’t.
DARK: Tell her or so help me I’m going to fill her mind with the Black until she drowns in it.
CONNOR: It’s the only thing I can do to feel anything anymore.
KORI: WHY didn’t you talk to me Connor? THAT is not feeling anything…that is KILLING yourself. Why the fuck didn’t you tell me?
CONNOR: Because this is SICKNESS Kori. Because when two people are drowning you don’t push the other one down first. Not me. I’m not that guy.
DARK: (Clapping) Beautifully performed…what an exquisite course of decadent misery.
SFX: STORM RUMBLES IN DISTANCE.
DARK: As much as I would love to continue sipping it, our next picture will begin shortly, so let’s bring this to its conclusion. Go to her Connor. It’s alright. Quite alright.
CONNOR: I can’t be what you deserve.
KORI: (Angry) YOU don’t get decide what I deserve Connor and your metaphor about drowning misses the point completely.
CONNOR: I’m sorry.
KORI: You’d better be. We have a lot to talk about later.
SFX: CAR DOOR QUIETLY OPENS.
ARCHIVIST: Shhh…I’m in a bit over my head here, but this can’t continue. Hold still…cutting through…
SFX: INSECTOID SCREECH.
ARCHIVIST: Well hello (emphasis as he stabs the spider) my little friend.
SFX: CUTTING CONTINUES.
CHAD: We’ve got to get that projector shut down. There’s a paper bag with explosives by the door dude. Light it up, I’ll keep these fools busy.
ARCHIVIST: I shall blow that thing sky high and the slide with it. Folklore and mysticism say that if an enchanted object is broken the magic flows out of it and while I’m sure there’s a scientific reason behind all this madness, it stands to reason that getting rid of that cursed object should send them packing. Off we go!
CHAD: Sure whatever bro. Stay frosty…and stay low damnit! God damn librarians.
DARK: Simon, my boy…if you would assist Connor and Kori into their sequel. A double billing!
SFX: PLASMA RIFLE FIRES.
KORI: Conner!
SFX: PLASMA RIFLE FIRES.
CHAD: Jesus dude…what the hell…that’s cold. Gotta get the kid out of here.
DARK: Splendid. The great thing about film is that those two can relive that moment in the shadows again and again and FEEEEEEED us for a long, long time.
SFX: THUNDER RUMBLES. LIGHTNING IN DISTANCE.
DARK: And that’s our cue. Ladies and gentleman! Appalachia and all its souls, our final show this evening is one you won’t want to miss. So, snuggle in close in your Fusion Fleas, Corvegas and Pick-R-Ups because we’re all going on a little journey. Simon, my boy…my beautiful dark progeny through which all of this was made possible…come right down front here.
SIMON: Are we leaving soon?
DARK: Hmm…you know it’s been centuries since we changed up our act, but in all honesty this shade has been my favorite. No one does crass excess like you Americans. Look out there…a sea of gas guzzling, dangerously nuclear-powered speed machines turning up for frights, thrills and delights…over there the virgins and their adopted offspring whose pride in scouting as the be all, end all of knowledge and status delivered them to me. There…the faceless voices on the radio heard by the masses whose envy of one another’s talents bought them free admission in stereophonic sound here. Look there! The Overseer, whose blind faith…
SIMON: The Overseer, whose blind faith in a God not born from on high but in the shadows of filing cabinets, secrets and the promise of salvation led her to abandon her one chance at happiness to fire, corruption of the flesh and mind and finally, unending death ad infinitum. She learned no lesson and still sits in a safe shell of the old world surrounded by objects of comfort, taking no action of her own…but ordering the actions of others…often which lead to their pain and death.
DARK: EXCELLENT! I couldn’t have said it better myself…when point of fact…I did. Pray continue…make me proud.
SIMON: The lost child, the mindless brute and the daughter of vanity whose lust for bottle caps to satiate earthly desires led Punch, Moose and Patsy to devise methods of parting the innocent of both coin and life. A greed that paved road with cap corner ridges and carbonated delivry right here to us.
DARK: To ME. And there…the broken lover whose lust condemned a friendship to fire and the love of her life to corruption. Amata was seduced as gently as a drifting maple leaf finding purchase on the wind and blowing away into crumbling compost. And on and on…everyone…every survivor, raider, cultist…the mad, the liars, the cheats and murders…and not ONE INNOCENT SOUL AMONG YOU.
SIMON: And last…
DARK: But not least…
SIMON: Chad…
DARK: No…you.
SIMON: What?
DARK: Oh child…child, child, child…I have been playing this game since your people sat hunched in caves with scarce but the light of a fire to keep the oh so hungry dark at bay. This isn’t their story, it’s been yours from the very beginning.
SIMON: I don’t understand…you told me…you told me last time that I…
DARK: That I would give you your heart’s desire? Roll back the clock to live a life again? To be your slipper footed, newspaper rustling Daddy? (Laughing) What story in all of human history have you ever heard where any aspect of me…has ever, ever done that.
SIMON: (Verge of tears) you promised…you said…
DARK: Look…there on the screen in a desert far here and beyond your grasp of time to a world I knew well. There they are, like friends you were so close to, but haven’t seen in an age…oh I knew them well. The Desert Fathers who fought every face of me and for the very first time laid low 7 of them to page as warning and doctrine to all…the paving stones of ancient religion. Out there…behind you behind cracked windshields and rusting engine blocks are those claimed by each of delicious sin…but you…ohhhh…youuuuuu you are the nexus point…you beautiful broken human being.
SIMON: STOP IT! What are you saying? I…I helped you, I did all of this for you. My head…stop…why are you pushing me away?
DARK: (Angry) Because you WANT it that’s why, a paternal wing to take your hand and walk the undying lands of shadow and dust, a guardian, a guide and a companion from whom you would drink greedily like a newborn at a teet…the attention and approval to fill that empty, empty heart of yours…
SIMON: WHY ARE YOU SAYING THESE THINGS?
DARK: You are the 7-fold corruption. Vainglory, avarice, envy, gluttony, sloth, wrath…oh such wrath, and LUST…the delicious carnal hunger that goes beyond the heart but to the flesh itself OH BOY look at what that has cost you in friendship. There is no end to how much you will feed or how far you will go to deliver all of them and this place to destruction.
SIMON: (Crying) I DIDN’T ASK FOR THIS! THIS ISN’T MY FAULT! I AM TIRED AND I CAN’T EVEN DIE! I CAN’T GET AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT’S LIKE??
DARK: NO! You can’t and that’s the beauty of it. Today is your birthday my boy and my gift to you is at last peace…because in a few moments projected through the screen we will be returning to sleep, a host of new shadows…but you, you will find yourself in an empty field. Utterly miserable, and with a loneliness with such flawless finality. THAT will be the sweetest vintage of wine for me I’ve savored for millennia.
SIMON: (Crying…transitioning to unhinged laughter) I thought I had a chance. I should’ve known…should’ve known. Chad was right…you do love to talk. You talk and talk and talk…and you always say too much…every story about you does that. You can’t help it. I won’t make that mistake. You missed the one that got away…that’s hilarious.
DARK: What are you babbling about? CHAD! How?! (Realization dawning) The LIBRARIAN! (Furious) BOOK KEEPER! CRAWL OUT FROM THE SHADOWS WHERE YOU’VE BEEN HIDING! COME BEFORE ME NOW. I’D VERY MUCH LOVE TO PLUCK OUT YOUR EYES AND FEED THEM TO THE RAVENS!
ARCHIVIST: Up here!
DARK: No…. (calling the Scorched) all of you….the tower…kill him…protect the machine. KILL!
ARCHIVIST: I never studied much about pre-war projection equipment but this looks important.
SFX: SMASH. SHORT CIRCUIT. FILM PROJECTOR SPUTTERS. WIND WHIPS UP.
DARK: STOP! STOP IT! YOU DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH DAMAGE YOU CAN DO!
SIMON: (Laughing) I should have popcorn for this…
DARK: KILL HIM! I COMMAND YOU!
SIMON: No. Because you WANT it.
ARCHIVIST: Chad! Don’t know if you’re out there son, but this place is about to blow! Look out below! Thank the good lord for bird bones!
SFX: SMASH OF PROJECTION ROOM GLASS. ARCHIVIST HITS THE GROUND.
ARCHIVIST: SIMON! COME ON!
SIMON: GO! I want to stay until the end.
DARK: Yes…the end…THE END STARTS NOW! On behalf of G.M. Achlys Electric Drive-In Theatre we bid you ALL, EVERY SOUL IN APPALACHIA GOOD NIGHT!
SFX: EXPLOSION OF LIGHT AND ENERGY AS THE SCREEN DISTORTS AND TEARS. PHANTOM WIND BEGINS PULLING EVERYTHING IN.
CHAD: HEY DICKHEAD! I HAVE A COMPLAINT FOR THE MANAGER! But first…this is for Simon!
SFX: PUNCH. BODY FALLS.
DARK: (Stumbles) Ahhhhhh (voice distorts in 2 dimensions) you…youuuuuuuuuu
CHAD: You’re just a god damned parasite latched unto that poor bastard Simon, but now he’s out cold…how’s that feel? Lost a little of your spunk?
DARK: I’m still plenty strong to squeeze your throat until the light fades from your eyes…and do it again! AGAIN!
SFX: GRAPPLING FIGHTING.
CHAD: You…didn’t…hear...my kid’s complaint. Your playground sucks. Susie! This is the dude that hurt Ella!
DARK: What?
SUSIE: (Growling leaps from wall and latches on clawing and biting) KILL YOUUUUUU! RARRRRRRRRR! (Continues attacking for a while)
DARK: GET….GET OFF ME!
SFX: TOWER EXPLODES.
DARK: NOOOO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! GET OFF ME CHILD!
SUSIE: KILL! KILLLLLLLL!!!! AHHHHHHHH!
ARCHIVIST: THE SCREEN! PUSH HIM THROUGH! HURRY!
CHAD: You….(punch) don’t (punch) TOUCH (punch) the KID!
SFX: KICK SENDS DARK THROUGH THE SCREEN TEAR.
DARK: SHE’S COMING WITH ME!!!
SUSIE: RARRRRRRRR!
DARK: No! SUSIE! Don’t let GO! DON’T LET GO!
SUSIE: CH….CH…..DAD?
SFX: EXPLOSION OF ENERGY PULLS THEM INSIDE.
CHAD: NOOOO!!!! SUSIE!!!
ARCHIVIST: It’s no good…it’s sealed….but why…it’s still here…something still linking him…what is…
SFX: SCREECHING METAL. BASS RUMBLE OF EARTH AS THUNDER EXPLODES ABOVE AND DARK RISES IN 2 DIMENSIONS ABOVE THE SCREEN. A TITAN OF MELTING FLESH AND BONE.
DARK: YOU WEAK, INSIGNIFICANT FOOLS! IT’S SELF-SUSTAINING NOW…EVERY SOUL BONDED AND CLAIMED…THE BOY WAS A TETHER…BUT YOU ALL ARE A FOOTHOLD…YOU ALL BELONG TO MEEEEEE! EVERY SIN. EVERY DARK THOUGHT AND ACT…EVERY MISERY AND DELICIOUS PAIN…IT’S ALL MINE!
SFX: WIND INTENSIFIES AS EVERYTHING STARTS BEING PULLED IN AGAIN.
CHAD: (Crying) Come back….come back…
ARCHIVIST: PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER! We have to end this…he’ll take everything, everyone…he can’t be allowed to do that do you hear me?
CHAD: She let go…why did she let go?
ARCHIVIST: (Slap) WAKE UP!
CHAD: Don’t….ever hit me again….
ARCHIVIST: You’re mad? GOOD! Use that…
SFX: BAG UNZIPPED.
CHAD: What is that?
ARCHIVIST: A little trick scrawled in a very old book that I think is a load of crap, but it won’t matter because he’ll believe it anyway and belief is what something real…bend these.
CHAD: Nails?
ARCHIVIST: It’s a witch’s bottle…found one up by Prickett’s Fort when I was participating in a Civil War reenactment no one showed up for. When settlers came over to the new world, they brought this with them. It’s supposed to trap evil spirits and witches inside. Found some of Dark’s hair on his pillow…that’ll do nicely. Now…
SFX: LIQUID POURING NOISE.
CHAD: What’s what?
ARCHIVIST: Don’t ask.
SFX: STOPPED CORKED.
ARCHIVIST: Fire up that throwing arm…throw it right at the screen! Hurry!
DARK: CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD! COME TO ME! WE’RE WAITING. WE’RE HUNGRY.
ARCHIVIST: Oh sweet lord…those…are some very big arms….
CHAD: Ah! Let go of me!
DARK: SUSIE’S IN HERE CHAAAAADDDD…AND OH SHE’S SOOOO SCARED. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ME BURY HER ALIVE? FRONT ROW SEATS! BEST VIEW IN THE HOUSE! WE’LL WATCH HER TOGETHER UNBLINKING VOYEURS AND GOBBLE TEETH STICKY CANDY APPLES WITH JUICE DRIBBLE CHINS AS THE WORMS CRAWL IN AND CRAWL OUT…
CHAD: I…..said…you don’t…touch the kid!
ARCHIVE: THROW IT! I can’t hold on much longer!
SFX: BOTTLE HURLED.
DARK: What is? NOOO!!! NOOOOOOOO!
SFX: BOTTLE SMASH, LIGHTNING AND THUNDER SWIRLS ABOVE.
DARK: CHAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD!
SFX: DRIVE-IN SCREEN FOLDS IN ON ITSELF IN A VORTEX OF HEAT OF LIGHT.
SLOWLY CRICKETS START CHIRPING AND WIND BLOWS GENTLY.
ARCHIVIST: (Groaning climbing out of a leaf pile) Well that worked a peach. I really can’t stand field work.
CHAD: Is…is it over? Where is everyone?
ARCHIVIST: Back where they started, I imagine…none the worse for wear probably…but…the mind is a funny thing. We tend to reinvent more pleasant memories to put a more comforting layer to horrors we can’t understand. Some will remember…some won’t.
CHAD: Everyone back where they started?
ARCHIVIST: Very probably…Simon was the first sucked in and he’s right over there. As for me…I’m going home. I have a friend to fix.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS ON LEAVES.
CHAD: Yeah…Simon…he was the first.
SFX: BODY DRAGGING NOISES. OWL HOOTS IN DISTANCE.
SCENE 20: INT. TNT DOME #2
JOHNS (V.O.): And that’s it. That’s all of it. The drive-in is gone…it all just collapsed in on itself and gently as you please, it drifted up and away with the autumn wind like a dream. Good and evil, right and wrong, justice and injustice I used to see with such clarity because there was a line. Glowing bright, a line of faith, belief…a code…whatever the hell you want to call it. The code we founded the New Responders on. The promise that in a world filled with darkness and shadow, with no structure of order that kept thoughts of, “what if I just stole this? What if I just killed him or her? What if…?”, in check. I can’t even see that line anymore. You ever look at the lines in the road? Really look at them? A couple of decades ago they were bright, shining…turn left, turn right, want to pass? Go for it! Those lines are beaten, cracked, weathered and in some places…some places you can’t see the lines anymore at all…just crumbling asphalt…because that’s how it starts. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you…what I’d been doing to cope…to feel something, anything, but if this has taught me anything it’s that none of us, not one of us is clean…and no one gets a happy ending. We’re all living a dark comedy, where murder is hilarious, and the terrors draw laughter and I can’t pretend everything is okay anymore. I’m leaving now…I’m sorry. I need to figure some things out and I need to end this, because we can’t live like this…trapped between life and death but not really living. I have one last thing I have to do…for all of us. Don’t come after me. By the time you find and read this, I’ll already be gone down that road and my footprints and what I leave behind will just blow away in the wind...just like a dream. Find happiness…the happiness you deserve. I can’t give that to you. Connor.
SFX: VOICES, FADING IN, TINNITUS NOISE.
JOHNS: …no Chad, I have no fucking idea. This wasn’t exactly covered in the Vault-Tec Criminal Justice course.
CHAD: Jesus dude, why don’t you have another. You drink worse than I do and that’s saying something.
SIMON: Hello? What the hell? HEY!
SFX: THUMPING. SHAKING.
SIMON: What is this? Let me out of here.
JOHNS: Ah shit…tranq’s worn off. There. It’s connected now. We should be good to go. How do you want to do this?
CHAD: I’m good. You head on back home or wherever and get your head on straight dude. Or hell go to the Rusty Pick and tell Moose, “BroFit” and he’ll pour you one without a word.
JOHNS: Suit yourself. (Mutters) Can’t believe I’m listening to life coaching from Chad Johnson.
SFX: FOOTSTEPS RECEEDE.
SIMON: CHAD! Unlock this thing. What the hell is this?
CHAD: You know there was a time when I’d find joy in this, but not anymore. I don’t like you. I’ve never liked you.
SIMON: Yeah well the feeling’s mutual. NOW OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR!
CHAD: You might as well save your breath and shut up for a few minutes while I set this thing up cuz I’ve got stuff to say. Ever since we were kids…as far back as I can remember I remember always hating you. At first I thought I was picking on yah because I had no chance of standing up to my Daddy and giving him back what he gave me for the dumbest shit…so I busted your balls because I didn’t know any better on how to deal with stuff. But the truth is dude you’re a hole. A black, empty hole. I’m sorry your folks died, I am. Things happen…and they’re awful, but you didn’t even cry for them…instead you added that tragedy to the book of your life that you’ve turned into one long sad story you love to talk about. You use it to make excuses for the choices you make and your situation. You did it then. You do it now. HE came back because of you, because that blackness inside you called him. And the sad thing is I think you liked it…all of it.
SIMON: Shut your mouth and…open…this…door….NOW.
CHAD: You were his tether. If I hadn’t knocked you cold and knocked him for a loop we’d all be trapped now, one of his. You’re like a cancer to this place…and as much as I’d love to kill yah for the good of everyone we both know it doesn’t work like that for us. You’d just pop back up with some brand new Halloween decorations and keep on keepin’ on.
SIMON: (Laughs) You want to have a go around? Open this up and I’m happy to oblige.
CHAD: This here is a cryo something chamber. It won’t kill yah, but it will put you on ice…put you to sleep. Tomorrow, next week or next Halloween there’s no chance in hell of him coming back.
SIMON: What? No! Open the god damned door! He’s gone! He has no hold over me.
CHAD: You’re also a liar. I hate liars.
SFX: WHOOSH AND ICE FORMING.
SIMON: No! No! Open the door!
CHAD: Say what you want about me, but I’ve never been dishonest about what I’m about. Goodbye Simon.
SIMON: Wait! Wait! (Shivering) Please…I need you to pass on a message.
CHAD: What?
SIMON: Tell Patsy, Moose and your little curtain climber that I’m coming for them. Do you hear me? I’m going to BURN you. I’m going to burn everything you care about. EVERYTHING! EH….
SFX: ICE SOLIDIFIES. FOOTSTEPS TO DOOR.
CHAD: Bring it. I’ll be waiting.
SFX: DOOR SLAMS SHUT AND LOCKS.
SIMON (V.O.): Where is this?
DARK (V.O.): Purgatory…perdition…the place between sleep and the waking world, the closest kiss of death you’ll feel for a long while yet.
SIMON (V.O.): You’re still here.
DARK (V.O.): I’m really not you know, this…manifestation as you call it is of your own design. Call it…a final light in the dark…hmph…that’s almost poetic. You’re standing over the precipice of insanity now. What a beautiful creature you’ve become. I regret you weren’t able to join me, we would’ve made a truly magnificent combination. But you wanted it too much.
SIMON (V.O.): I want him to pay. I want peace. The world put back the way it was supposed to be.
DARK (V.O.): Quite. Sleep now, because the Soul’s Midnight approaches and I want to tell you a tale before even this form has to leave you. One final story of Hallowe’en. You know the story of Stingy Jack? The origin of your jack-o-lantern tradition?
SIMON (V.O.): Yes.
DARK (V.O.): There’s a part of the story most don’t know. Before purgatory and the apple tree trap, before the coin and the rosary and a deal for his soul, on a lonely road beneath a blood moon Jack came upon the wizened figure of an old man lost, frightened and hungry. Jack reached out a hand of mercy and kindness and before his eyes the form of the man melted away revealing an Angel. For his act of pure kindness, the Angel offered him three wishes and in delicious irony and in typical fashion for man, Jack squandered the wishes, wishing any soul who sat in his chair, or plucked a bough from his sycamore tree, or attempted to borrow his cobbling tools to be stuck to the spot. The Angel’s disappointment at such frivolous, selfish wishes was palpable. The Angel granted them, but condemned Jack’s soul from entering the gates of Heaven. Jack had a chance at pure happiness, the deep altruism that can lift a world out of darkness and instead he turned to his darker nature. A fork in the road of his life that could’ve led into the light and not forever to wander in the dark.
SIMON (V.O.): Why are you telling me this.
DARK (V.O.): (Sighs) B6 and A4.
SIMON (V.O.): What is that?
DARK (V.O.): A birthday present and you already know what they are. Happy Halloween child.
MEDIA: OUTRO SONG – COVER OF ‘BURN THE WITCH’ BY RADIOHEAD.
DARK (V.O.): Burn
Burn
Burn
A burning ring of fire….
